Thunder & Blood Starter Set Coming To Age Of Sigmar

The new Starter Set for Age Of Sigmar has now been added to the Games Workshop for pre-orders this weekend. Thunder & Blood offers up a cut-down slice of the original starter box miniatures-wise with a few extras thrown in elsewhere...
The set comes with a selection of warriors for the Stormcast Eternals lead by their Lord Relictor as well as the Khorne Bloodbound under the lash of the Bloodstoker, backed up by the Khorgorath.
As well as the models, which actually come pre-coloured in red and gold...
...you will also get the various bits and pieces needed to play including the measuring device, dice and those battle mats that you see here. It can be flipped over to reveal another side too. Interestingly the box you get your models in then works as the terrain you see in the middle of the table!
Inside is also a guide to playing your first games with a series of Battleplans to get you going. If I were you I'd then pick up Age Of Sigmar Skirmish and start playing out a new story using some of these models.

I wonder why it’s called that instead of the much more common Blood & Thunder? It confuses me sufficiently that I find I read it as ‘Thud & Blunder’. True story.
I may be reading into this more than I should but the way the stormcast can enter battle would suggest that first comes the thunder then comes the blood.
Looks a good set and good value at 50 notes.
Nice to see GW moving forward with their starter sets. Mat plus terrain is a great addition for a starter set but colour-coded plastic is the best bit. Awesome stuff.
They removed the best miniatures from the original kit and replaced them with less inspiring characters… total non-sense.
But they’ve added a mat, some terrain and halved the price.
They didn’t replace them with anything aside from a mat and some terrain. Its just the other AoS starter plus mat and terrain, minus the 2 big bosses and £25 off the price. Seems like a good deal to me. Definitely a better intro for new players.
They made Sigmarines look even worse by having ones in this new boxed set be made from that ugly gold plastic. Even Khorne guys look worse when made from colored plastic.
Couldn’t disagree more. I love that gold and red. I’m interested to see how they’d look with a touch of blue to the gold shields and flesh to the red, with metal weapons all round, then a quick wash…
How people actually manage to complain that stuff is made of coloured plastic instead of grey is beyond me. It is a huge step forward allowing new players to play more easily straight from the box. Don’t like it? Just paint them like you would with grey plastic.
Complaining for the sake of complaining because there’s nothing left to complain about perchance?
I said it because I don’t like how those look so I was just stating my opinion about it. What us beyond me is why you are so bothered by that opinion.
Besides I can play that game as well. Getting triggered over opinion of others for sake of getting triggered over something?
Simply getting annoyed that the complaints about GW are getting more and more tenuous by the week and have been for months. It really seems like you’re clutching at straws to find things to complain about now. They come out with a practically perfect starter set, with loads of minis at a great price point, with a mat, terrain, colour coded minis and everything else you need to start playing and still its not good enough. Let’s get this straight, you are bothered by my opinion because you think that that boxed set is perfect. Why can’t you just accept that some one does not like something that you do, In this case use of colored plastic and how it makes those models look. You need to understand something. I am not complaining about GW, I am stating my opinion about this product that just happens to be from GW. So really I am not one in here who is clutching at straws. Fair enough mate, the coloured plastic is a crap idea and ruins the minis and forcing new players to paint their minis before they play games is a the best way to go for a starter set…

50 notes? Wow that actually is a good price
The good news is you can spend another 50 to get the missing three heroes! So you are paying 25 for the mat and terrain.
If you prefer to have the heroes the £75 box is still available without the mat and terrain
And that’s why this release is so okay. You got more choice.
I struggle to see how this is less choice when both options are available. This is probably the best entry set to AoS that there is, especially with a discount from a FLGS you’re getting more models for each side than you would in the start collecting boxes for less than the price of one.
No need for any kind of struggle here I think.;)
To me personally the “bigger” starter set is more interesting (never played AoS but I’m open to it and am primarily in for the minis) and had they replaced it I might argue against that step. But either way this here is a good set and I believe a more convenient entry vector.
If I use your “logic” of the mat and scenery now costing £25, then nearly 50 models for £25 seems an exceptionally good deal.
It’s a nice starter set, a good introduction to AOS.
I guess it makes sense that the space marines (joke intended) are golden as it is their main colour.
I don’t know why they bother with AOS anyway.. the game looks like Warhammer 40k with different miniatures. If someone asked me for advice on how to get into the hobby I would be telling them to keep far away from AOS and go for 40k or another system.
Because AoS is a great game with great mini’s maybe ? And plays differently.
The rules of new 40k are certainly quite similar to AoS now, but there are some key differences – for example the changing turn priority in AoS, which really mixes things up and gives the game a different feel.
And the flavour of the miniatures, setting, background and landscapes in AoS is quite different to 40k, so I think it offers valid variety. Sometimes people just prefer the feel of spears and crossbows to power armour and lascannons.
Shame if you offered advice based on assumption and no experience of playing AoS. I’ve always loved the worlds of Warhammer and have painted and converted miniatures on and off since 1987. I’d never played before as the rules were too offputting for me. AoS changed all of that and I love what it offers in terms of accessibility and fun as a game, and a huge amount of world building that is going into the background.
I agree mate, my drunken mates (read as gaming buddies) and I have played 4 times, (rounding down, and yes I did actually count and do the maths) as many AoS games in the last 2 years as we did play WFB in the previous 2 years, it is just faster and more accessible, and brought one of the afore mentioned drunken mates back to fold after his faith had waned…. I guess I always seen Warhammer as a more historical wargame with fantasy setting i.e. rank and file, fantasy races etc.
I am not saying AOS is a crap game, but it is now much more similar to 40k then ever before and some of the new races could be easily integrated into the 40k setting.
That’s a pretty neat set. For the same price as any “start collecting” kit you get two armies and random stuff you might or might not need. Right now, this is a way better option that “start collecting” if you’re into stormcast or the fleshyboys.
A really good intro set for AoS . My local store had a big AoS tournament a couple of weeks back and it was a tonne of fun.
50 quid (probably less from other retailers) for nearly 50 models plus rule book plus mat and scenery I’d have thought would be difficult to complain about but apparently some have given it a really good go.
Ha, seems some folk just can’t help themselves when it comes to GW products.
Same price as a “Start Collecting” box so insane value here. Obviously GW are just bad people though.

Good discount on dark sphere too : £37.50, id say thats actually a pretty good price personally.
Not too shabby – round the “right price” for a starter box, and a nifty way around the problem of providing some scenery in there. I still think some card push-out buildings/wall/trees would be a much quicker, cheap and cool looking addition, but can see this as a good alternative. Quick question – are these red/gold plastic or plastic pre-sprayed? There was some chromed Marines and Necrons a few years back, which were okay but as soon as you clippered them off the sprue, the chrome paint flaked off – hoping the colour is IN the plastic for these. @dogma2097 It is apparently coloured plastic (ie dye in the plastic.) accourding to my local games store manager, just like the Blood Bowl starter box. I hope that helps 🙂
I don’t like the look of the red and gold plastic, but objectively speaking, it makes a lot of sense, and is likely to be a boon for people starting out in the hobby (which is clearly who it’s aimed at). Overall it’s a good set and at a good price for a starter. It would probably also make a good addition to the original AoS starter set: you get a bunch more of the more generic models without duplicating the very specific ones. Just saw this on Wayland’s website for 40 quid. A shed load of lovely minis plus mat plus scenery plus rules. Now that’s hard to beat. Mixed feelings about the coloured plastics. Great for playing out of the box but I suspect it would end up appealing to my lazy side and the minis would go unpainted (at least when they’re grey I’m annoyed by the lack of colour so I’m forced to clean off the flash and base them – and when I go to all that trouble I then want to go the extra mile and actually paint… Read more »
