The Portuguese were fairly untested and untrained as soldiers until they fell under the command of one Sir Lt.General William Beresford. He moulded them into an effective and brave fighting force that was drilled under British rules and traditions.

They were known to most as the ‘fighting cocks’ although they also got the somewhat more unceremonious name ‘pork and beans’ from the regular British soldiers. All of it was meant in good jest though it seems and they were well respected among the army.
