It’s been almost twenty years since the first Harry Potter book exploded onto the literary scene. Now, nine years after the release of Deathly Hallows, fans can once again return to the wizarding world as the eighth story Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is now available to buy.
This new book, which saw release one minute after midnight on July 31st, differs from the other books in the series as it is a script. The play itself was based upon the new story by J.K. Rowling and was written by John Tiffany and Jack Thorne and saw its debut performance on Saturday the 30th of July at the London Palace Theatre.
“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband, and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”
Return To The Wizarding World
Like, I think, the majority of the world, I am a big fan of the Harry Potter franchise. I was extremely excited by the prospect to delve back into a world that, thanks to Rowling’s effort on her website Pottermore, is continuing to expand and become more and more intricate.
I have already picked up a copy of the script, which is the rehearsal script used by the cast during the show’s previews, and while I won’t give anything away, from the little I have read so far I can confirm that there are a couple of cool surprises in store.
With the upcoming release of the new movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it seems that new life is once again being injected into the franchise.
With this in mind, I think that the climate is right for a new tabletop game based in the series. Harry Potter is crying out for exploration in the freedom of an RPG and I really hope this is something we could see happening in the future.
Are you excited about the release of The Cursed Child? Are you going to see the play? What would you do in a Harry Potter RPG?
