Community Spotlight: Shadespire Skeletons, Heavy Hitting Bots & A Dragon Ball Surprise!

March 23, 2018 by brennon

Come and check out some awesome projects that MIGHT just give you some inspiration to paint something epic yourself.

We’re delving into the Hobby & Painting Forum to find out what you’ve been painting over the last week or so.

Sepulchral Guard by thelostdog

Kicking things off we dip into the world of Shadespire which seems to be inspiring a lot of people these days to get back into the hobby. thelostdog has certainly been drawn in and painted up the Sepulchral Guard from the game’s expansion.

The models are looking superb and almost have a comic book style to them I think the contrast between the bone white of the skeletons and the deep red of their cloaks is the real key here and brings the miniatures to life. You can see it more on the backs of the models where the shading and highlighting comes through very nicely indeed.

For someone who has been out of the hobby for a long time and just got back into it around eighteen months ago, I would say that these miniatures show off some awesome skill. A nice mix of the Corax White undercoat followed up by Army Painter Dark Tone really has made those skeletons pop out.

Some great models and a wonderful paint job. Make sure to let us know if you keep painting up more of these Shadespire miniatures!

GKR Heavy Hitters by agis

Next, we turn to a favourite game of Justin here at Beasts Of War. agis has taken his time to paint up his own models from GKR Heavy Hitters with his own improved paint schemes.

GKR Heavy Hitters #1 by agis

The larger models for this game come pre-painted with the smaller ones simply coloured to match them. This wasn’t enough for agis though who, using the standard paint schemes for the sets, decided to go ahead and add his own personal touch to the models.

They all look very striking and the lighter base colour for the models provides a nice contrast to the black and grey that also covers some of the inner workings of these massive robots. He even went to the trouble of trying to paint the actual markings from the game board onto the bases so that they matched up during play.

A fantastic way to expand upon a collection and give it your own personal touch.

Large Scale Dragon Ball Figure by kamaron

Last but not least we turn to a HUGE project on something which is very much NOT a miniature. This is a massive statue of Vegetto from Dragon Ball Z and was painted up using a combination of airbrushing, and classic techniques. Here’s how he looked, to begin with a Space Marine for reference.

Dragon Ball Blue Vegetto #1 by kamaron

And, this is how he turned out! I’d say that is a massive improvement over the original and the painting really has made the model pop. He very much has that anime/manga look going on and there is a lot more depth to the model overall.

kamaron goes into detail about the problems that he encountered when painting this model. It was very large and so he had to break it down into components to begin painting. However, this meant that when reassembling the piece he ruined some of the work he’d done and therefore had to do a lot of touching up to get it looking as awesome as it does there.

I have to take my hat off to the work done on the hair in particular which looks superb, especially with the fade up from the darker blue into the almost pure white. Match that with the amount of time and effort devoted to the clothes and those ripples in the trousers and you have a brilliant figure that kamaron should be proud of.
