Figured I’d start this in case people have some specific questions regarding the the game in general. As a Pod Squad member I can answer just about any question you might have. So ask away.

Yes players or new players ask away! I too am a Pod Squad Member in Las Vegas, Nevada if you ever would like a demo game stop by Avatar comics and game or hit me up here for request.

How many minis you play normally in a game?

  • Avatar Image roland1p said 7 months, 2 weeks ago:

really it all dependson what kind of army you build and the points cost. typically a 750 point game, which is a good starter value, has anywhere from 5 to ten models in a force.

  • Avatar Image beermonkey10p said 7 months, 2 weeks ago:

Even the bigger tournament games at 1250 average between 10-15 models. That’s usually about two squads of Gears, with 5 gears per squad. Then add a couple of light or maybe a single heavy tank. No tanks maybe the larger Striders like the Hussar model. Then maybe infantry. A unit of infantry is 12 bases. This is by no means definitive but will give you a good idea of the kinds of numbers out there.

For the record you can do swarm type armies. Fielding 20+ lighter Gears at 1250. It tends not to work as well as 4″ radius area of effects will clear large patches of them off the board, but it is an option.

Another point a Starter army for most factions will let you build an effective 750 – 800 TV (Threat Value) army with some nice upgrades. Add a couple of tanks maybe infantry and you’re at 1000 easy.

Is the two player starter a good place to start?

  • Avatar Image beermonkey10p said 6 months, 3 weeks ago:

Depends on what you are looking to do. If you are trying to learn the game from the ground up with a friend who also has never played, then yes. If you know you want to buy in, and there is already a group around, I’d say no. Here why:

The Starter gives you 3 Northern, and 3 Southern gear. That’s not enough gears to learn the rules and get started. You’ll be able to play some quick intro games and get a feel for some of the complexity of the rules. Movement, Indirect Fire, Cover and Concealment. As you go from here you’ll need to buy more gears to even make a complete squad.

To make a full squad will need 1 blister more. So for a pure I want a Norther Army standpoint it’s not great. If you want to start small paint some models and learn the basic before really sinking your teeth in this is a great place to start.

Now if you are already set to invest in Heavy Gear (and why wouldn’t you be?) a starter box is a better deal. Right off the bat a Northern or Souther (or any other) starter will get you a 750 to 800 TV army. It provides a wonderful foundation to build on with 2 complete squads.

So in conclusion if you’re not sure, and you and a friend pitch in or you just want to pitch it to a friend the Two Player Starter is ideal. If you are looking to begin playing Heavy Gear in ernest just go with a regular starter box. Either way some tips:
-Field Manual is the rules! They are the most recent and complete rules. Read those!
-Locked and Loaded rules are outdated but the fluff, and army list building rules are current. Use that to build armies.
-Either way you go Gear Garage is an essential tooll. Download it and love it.

    Hope that helps.

Can you guys post a sort of faction by faction break down at all? I’m busy with my Dystopian fleet at the moment, but Heavy Gear has interested me for a while and has gone on my long term thoughts list, and the Drop Pod 9 website faction section seems a little out of date! If not don’t worry!

  • Avatar Image drahazar12p said 5 months, 3 weeks ago:

there is a good faction break down here
    http://dp9forum.com/index.php?s=0e91a26cff2ec6be94d7ccb0698b9a1f&showforum=39

They are the spotlights that are sticked by Iceraptor it talks about the faction or group and has tactical info.

i got a random question (noobie ho!) on the main heavy gear page what is the red mech on the left called it looks great but i cannot seem to find it anywere… Help

  • Avatar Image beermonkey10p said 5 months, 3 weeks ago:

If we’re talking about the same gear it’s a Koala. The Western Frontier Protectorate took the old Bear, a Fire Support gear that was largely replaced by the Grizzly, and made it air droppable. Thus the Koala, or Drop Bear! It’s an awesome looking model. For mor info check out Drop Bears Dive!

I’m totally new to DP9 stuff so here we go…

Im really looking to make the plunge into the system, but for now I am going to get the 2 player starter set with a friend, to obviously learn and compete without breaking the bank (student here :P ) From there you say 1 blister would be enough to form a force?

From a modelling side, how well do they work with magnets? I hear the game is heavily customisable so I would hate to get stuck with now options to change my mind! (on that note, anyone know a good tutorial that shows this process?)

Also another question on Heavy Gear Arena. We want to purchase that game too…

Would any gears we get be crossable into both games?

    Thanks in advance

Well I know for a fact that the resin tanks & striders are great with magnets and pins and I have seen people magnetize their gear minis but I haven’t tried that. Gears are interchangeable between Arena and Blitz especially if you magnetize them since gears have semi static configs per unit type and addons added in Blitz while arena is very free form in the configuration of gears. 1 $20 dollar blister with 2 models will do you for arena but for blitz a $45 dollar 5 gear squad box would be better
