Here’s what I recommend for people who want to start playing infinity.
Terrain: Lots of terrain. More than you’ve used for any other wargame. You need to block long lines of sight across the table and provide lots of variety in the terrain elements. I recommend a few large blocky buildings with roof access, a few open buildings with playable interiors, and any other natural terrain elements you might use. The basic idea is that no large area (8″ diameter) is empty of terrain. The effective range of basic weapons is 16″, and if basic troopers can’t safely engage at this range then the game belongs to the heavy weapons.
Rules: Read the rules. Pretend you understand them. Play a game. Expect to get it wrong. The rules are not like any other wargame (that I’ve played) and they’re fairly complex at first. After a few games they’ll start to make more sense. Then you’ll wonder how you ever got them so wrong, because they’re quite intuitive. Make sure to visit the officials forums and post any rules questions you have – the community is eager to answer them.
First Game: Play basic units. Just 3-6 troops on either side with nobody having a special weapon (anything that uses SWC in the army list). Don’t worry about your lieutenant, just get a feel for moving and shooting and how orders work. The hardest thing to deal with is the idea of one unit acting with all the orders in your turn. That’s not what usually happens, but it can. Two to five units typically use all the orders in a turn, because they’re the ones in an advantageous position. If you have an advantage, press it – your opponent will do the same.
Minis: By and large, they all play well on the table. Get the ones you love. If you’ve run into an issue with your troops not performing well, the problem might lie in the terrain or the tactics.
Factions: They each have their own areas of expertise, but they all support a broad variety of playstyles. Again, get the one with the minis you like.

Yep, just start with a few basic grunts on each side to start with to get to grips with the basic Order/ARO system, using the new Quick Start PDFs, then start adding in specialists/Heavy Infantry etc.
I agree; the best way to learn the basics of the game is with 3-5 basic infantry. Once you have a feel for how the game works, throw in some special rules by using the Quick Start rules. The rules for Infinity are quite intuitive, but it can take some getting used to.
When constructing the table, remember one thing above all else: You can never have too much terrain. In fact, when you think you have enough, throw in some more for good measure, and make sure you get it into the deployment zone. Infinity doesn’t need a 4×4 table; it can work well on a 4×3 or 3×3.
And finally, choose your army by models you like. 9 times out of 10, you can have a fully-functional army by choosing the figures you like, rather than going by stats. Nothing is impervious; nothing is invincible. If your 100+ point TAG waltzes into open ground, expect it to take some damage from a 5-point unit carrying a Chain Rifle.
I am starting with a bit of cheap terrain and proxy miniatures from another game. I am looking through the Infinity miniatures for what excites me the most. Fortunately or unfortunately, they all are excellent models.
It will take me awhile to get fully into Infinity. I have to order everything on-line as no stores seem to carry Corvus Belli products here in Portland, OR.
Thinking of starting Pan Oceania and on other fourms they say that you shouldn’t start with a sectional army (e.g. military orders or shock army of acontecimento) as it cuts off options. Is this the case and if so how?
I think it’s fine to start with a Sectorial army. In a lot of ways it’s easier to build up an initial force because you DON’T have all the options of the full faction. I would just stay away from using link groups until you’ve got a strong grasp of the basic rules.

im just waiting for my models and me and a friend are gonna start to play we already got tons of terrian.
I have a load of Combined Army… which has a ton of special rules. I wanted to teach my children to play, but CA vs CA would get difficult. So I bought a 200 point Nomad force. And I can play up to 200 points of (more) basic CA and they can learn more easily.
Useful advice. I just picked up the Infinity rulebook today. Cant wait to get started. Haven’t picked up any of the starter sets yet. The plan was to study the book over the next week and pick an army that had a play-style I could get into. The idea that all armies have multiple play-stiles really appeals to me….makes my initial choice a lot easier
Can’t believe you’ve not played it before t9nv3, I convinced my best friend to play it after buying him the rule book and it’s become both our favourite game. It’s everything that 40K wants and should be but fails at.
Just focus on the fluff and model look, each army has a variety of play styles and valid tactics, most of the time the performance depends on Your tactical abilities and not the list itself.
In my case, Ive chosen two faction based on the look and couldn’t decide which one I like the most, so I’m collecting and playing both of them (Aleph and Nomads)

No one was playing it in my area. Now that I’m taking a closer look, I cant believe I’ve never played it either. Not a huge investment either. I can get a couple of starter sets and some models for less than a GW battalion box and have enough models for a decent game
Couldn’t agree more, I’ve got an Ariadna and Nomads army each, have about 30 models for each and it’s still cheaper than GW. Such a great game, quite quick to play, the choosing of your army is quicker as there is no adding little extra to your troops, like in WH et al. the models are awesome. By the way I’ve found that the Vallejo plastic putty is the best thing for filling the joints in your models, as the excess just wipes away on your finger and drys really quick, where as green stuff is a ball ache.
