Lizardmen
Planning, buying and painting an army for lizardmen.
Ok, so I’m planning an army of lizardmen. Know what the core of my army will be and how I want it to run. But never played them before, does anyone have fav heroes/lords/priests and why?
My main hero for lizard men is skink priest on engine of the gods. The bonuses it provides are quite useful especially burning alignment and portent of warding though not sure about the new 8th ed FAQ changing the rules so that instead of getting +1PD and DD it now gives +1bonus to all of his casting and dispelling attempts. Is expensive though 355pts basic so should only show up in 2000pt+ games as thats a fair chunk of your hero pts gone. Also nothing wrong with skink chief on steggy with stegadon war spear but do need to get that charge.
Also with how nasty miscasts are now a Slann with cupped hand of the old ones could be quite deadly by throwing the miscast on a wizard in a enemy unit could cause a lot of damage.
Also when not playing pure skinks like taking a Scar Veteran with Scimitar of Sun Resplendant as those 6 str5 attacks can really put a dent in most enemy units and not to shabby against heroes either though would be careful now your striking at I order even if you get a charge.
Yeah, a Slaan is a must, one with Focus of Mystery and the Lore of Life should be pretty good now, casting The Dwellers Below or combining Throne of Vines and Regrowth if your Slaan is with TG would work nicely. A pair of them could do very well in the magic phase. Also, lots of Skink heroes as they’re nice and cheap/
I’ve also heard that Salamanders may be pretty deadly in 8th so you could think about a couple of units of them.
Cool thanks for the feedback – getting my head around the magic and balancing the slann vs skink priests. Thinking of getting one of each to start with and see how they play.
No of points for a starter army? I don’t want to invest too much time or money in a huge army only to find I don’t like some of the units. So thinking of getting a good solid core [saurus, temple, and skinks] and then a little of everything to see how they play. What is a good point size for starters? 1000 or 1500 or does it need to be 2000 to include the fun heroes?
Sounds like the battalion box would be good; some skinks, saurus, TG and Cold Ones and it’s not a horrendous price. That and a hero would be a good start.
At 1500 points you’d be able to get a nicely upgraded Slaan in your list, you just fall short at 1000.

i just bought a battalion box and i you should too. The 20 Saurusw. are very usefull , especially since there are only 16 in a normal box. The Templeguard is great and usefull as are the 12 skinks and the Riders.
In my opinion you can save a lot of money by building your Saurusvets etc out of templeguard and Rider /Warrior bits. No metall models and much cooler look
My ownly thoughts for a ‘starter’ army is going to all powerful ebay. Thats how I got 3000+ points I already had a box of skinks, saurus and slann but I really wanted to get into it. But if you have the money I would say go the army starter with the Lizardmen Battalion. http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat1620197&prodId=prod1810010 Dollors to Dounts your best bet. More than just money wise and that as well. You get a box to throw all your assemblies guys to throw in the back of the car. It gives you enough of the army to get some pratice painting in before you move on more difficult or should I say models you want to show a bit more such as the Stegadons Slann and the other big guys.
But that and a slann and you have enough points for 1500 easy.
Cheppo we going to see some happy snaps of those guys when your finshed?
The basis for any Lizardman army should be a unit of temple guard with a slann, and a scar vet for preference. The unit itself is pretty immovable, the slann can be a battle standard and with his magical prowess this unit can form a solid base for the rest of the army.
Like Caladors said I would go for Ebay for your basic core units, got 60 sauraus and 30 skinks over a few bids for about £15 (they mostly needed asembling and some broke in the post). Failing to get that together I would opt for the battalion to get started.
Then added a stegadon as the model is very nice and my favourite hero choice at the moment is the Skink Warchieft with the stegadon spear. You can also make a Skink Priest out of the remaining bits!
Other good heroes can just be a army standard bearer
Thanks for the great ideas – so I’ve ordered a battalion box, slann, a stegadon, skink priest and chakax cos the model looks so cool. I’ve got some mixed bits from ebay coming, about 20 odd skinks and another 10 saurus. Phase 2 will be a battle standard, Kroq-gar, possibly another batt box. Later some kroxigors and chameleons. Not sure about the hunting packs or terradons, will play want I’ve got first and see where I need to expand or fill gaps.
Think I’ve decided on how to paint the bulk of the army.
Solid use of washed to define scales and the simple highlighting to pick out important elements.
Nice painting man! Welcome to the fold, look forward to sunning myself with you. (Cause were lizards..)
That skink looks awesome mate!
Definitely think about Sallies, they’re pretty nice now with no partials. Also terradons and chameleon skinks if you’re up against alot of warmachines.
And I agree, the Chakax model looks excellent.
Thats top notch! a envy you good sir!
Yeh I’ve been looking at a Lizzie army for WHFB as well, I have a warband in Necromunda and the Skink blowpipes are just truly evil! throw in a Slann and an Engine and you will have a pretty awesome Magic phase too.
