With the new sourcebooks for LOTR, do you think the armies in which we play will change alot or will they just tweek a few rules here and there.

Also do you think they will bring out a new rulebook as well?

    War gaming > Video gaming
    40k – 5000 Points – Necrons FOW – 1200 Points – Germans
    LOTR – 2000 Points – Gondor

Yes after look at the change. You have to have a hero to lead a warband. So wait i can’t just have one hero and 48 warriors anymore. What is this.

The rule book is changing a little bit again like it did before like 5 years back i believe. GW have chosen to mess up another of the ranges. Bring on infinity for me.

Brimlock Engineers, Tanith First and Only, Catachan II. (10,500 points. No super heavies)
The Emperor may be able to walk on water but Sly Marbo can swim through land.

Little love for the excellent game, so…..

Currently basing my Urak-hai force on 60×30 bases for HotT- given up trying to sell them. 2xebay fail, bring and buy fail, local players fail…so might as well get a use out of them.

5 figs to a base for pikes and blades, 3 bowmen, solo fig for general

will sell unused at stupid low price when im done

    Hey trebormills -
Whenever you want to sell your Urak-hai please let me know. Currently trying to accumulate as many orcs as possible for a massive game later this year.

Well they are mostly on 60×30 snow bases now- so a bit late at the mo.

I feel its a shame GW have not had a bit more sucess with LotR. Nice minis and rules. Hobbit will help but for how long? I sold a massive Mordor force off in the summer which was a painful choice to make.

Im looking forward to hearing about what has changed with the new books and also the new figures.

GW staff in the past don’t seem to of been that enthusiastic about LOTR but now I think they are becoming more aware of it as a a game because they are holding more LOTR events and games and I reckon it’s because of the hobbit but they don’t want to say anything.

But realistic I think LOTR has had it’s day it’ll never be as popular as 40k but it’s still a good game to get into and play.

As a small skirmish game it’s fine. Last time round it started off as a skirmish game and the games got bigger and didn’t work.
If they keep it to skirmish level it’ll work well. The hobby always has room for a small game which basically are as fun as you and your opponent want them to be.
GW have the licence for the LOTR & Hobbit which comes out this Christmas so we can expect a whole lot more before and in 2013.
GW know it will not be as big as 40K but it will bepular for a while and pull people into the hobby who may never of got started otherwise, which has got to be good.

Only just got a chance to read the new books.

Biggest change as said is the 1 hero per 12 warriors, so changes the dynamics a lot as most games I see exceed this level. Just a way to increase profit by making poeple by finecast ?

Also the bow limit is only for warriors and is per allegiance. Small change but.

My son has just had to change his tournament list which was Celeborn and a heap of elves (archers, galadhrim warriors etc) which was 1 hero for 48 warriors to now taking 4 heros and only 34 warriors.

Other change is bringing in different types of warrirors. A lot of heros can now upgrade certain warriors etc.

Let’s hope if they bring out a 5th edition rule book for the Hobbit then it’s like previous releases and only small changes are made.

Got to say I was really disapointed with the new source books. Minimal content an understatement. Not that I’m advocating it but you could memorise any rules you need to know by reading the shop copy in about 5 minutes.

Yeah i picked up the new book and thought to myself this is the third time i’ve had to buy another book to play the same army when all it is that changes is the lay out and army size.

Think the game plays out so different now and i must say i no longer like it.

Having had a read through the 5 books, so far I can say points values have changed for some of the models. banners cost the same across all forces now, some heros have gone up by 5, the spider queen by a lot more, some warriors by a point or so. Seems to be trying to balance things that may have been not quite right.

Likewise one of the reinforcement entries for war horns previously could be taken by almost any warrior is now limited to certain choices, and very few evil ones.

new types of troops based on what heros. Such as Celeborn being able to take elites for an extra point and so on.

Having done a thorough check on stats as yet but wouldn’t be surprised if some of those may have changed by a point.

So overall it isn’t a major change but a tweaking of the numbers. Probably all that is needed when the system works so well.

The big change for me is the number of characters. I do like the idea of warbands though, it makes allied forces very nice and themed but also simple to use. From reading the scenarios they actually look pretty good, quite looking forward to playing them.

The tweaks should be welcomed imo. I think my only disappointment is the size of the books, which puts me off buying them all at £15 a go, particularly bearing in mind few people only play one army.

Probably the worst painter in the world.
Armies: 40k: 3rd/4th ed Black Templars, 5th ed Necrons. Fantasy: Dark Elves (in progress) LOTRSBT: Isengard, Gondor.

I find that allowing you to ally with any good force or if your evil any evil force is a good idea because it makes the game more varied and interesting. So that the game isn’t restricted to one army each.

I love the new source books, I haven’t played Lotr since I was 12, I’m 20 now, getting overly giddish at the prospect of the hobbit later this year, Already collecting a Dwarf army. I’m so excited, Gimli son of Gloin and Glonlin son of Dwalin leading my Dwarves to battle. Longbeards go to war against their old enemy, the orc, and hunt a new foe, the Easterling.

And what luck 13 more Dwarves … thirteen, humph, a hero and 12 warriors.

Haha, of course, of GW you sly game maker, it would fit perfectly, Thorin Oakenshield and his crew, including the fathers of Gimli and Glonlin.

I realise I don’t remember the old way, before this book, but I have much love fore the lore, and I try so very hard to make it correct. I have to say, the Free peoples is one definitely worth picking up, not only because of the dwarves but because it is 20 more pages long than the others for the same price.

Call me reganspor when trying to quote me, otherwise it wont work.

I haven’t stopped playing the skirmish game as I still think it’s lots of fun.
I looked at the new books in the shop and about the only that’s new is the warband rule.
I will not be buying them as I think they are overpriced (so what’s new GW) when I already have all that I want with the old ones. I only play with a few people and tend to use heroes and officers anyway.
