The Underdog posted on Warseer that the release date of te 6th edition of Warhammer 40k might come a little sooner. It was first speculated that it would come somewhere in mid-July, but his source claims it will come just before July, with the 30th of June being the most likely candidate.
It also seems the ‘Autumn of Flyers’ might come sooner than expected, as there are various hints that there will be some flyer models released in the June slot, with official announcements in May’s White Dwarf, so we should see some leaked pictures popping up somewhere around this time next month.
The Necron Doom/Nightscythe and Ork Flyers have already been spotted in various warehouses, and there are also sources claiming a new Space Marine flyer for this release wave. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a Tyranid Harpy and Dark Eldar Voidbomber in this release wave was well. Seems to coincide with the release of 6th edition, which will most likely have new rules for flyers.
I would say…
Announced in June with a release date of either 30th June or 7th July.
I cant see the flyers in June TBH makes little sense to release an expansion before the main rule book.
If they do you can be certain that 6th ed will be only slightly different to 5th ed.
Of course the thing we are all over looking is that perhaps the main rulebook has awesome new rules for flyers and the flyers are relased at the same time as the new rules as the way of driving open our wallets (smart move)
So perhaps new rules and Flyers announced in Junes White Dwarf and then Released in July.
Well, the Harpy, Doom/Nightscythe and Void Bomber already have rules, so releasing the model for them shouldn’t be a problem. It would indeed seem strange to release new rules for the Space Marine and Ork flyers in the current Fast Skimmer format, only to be changed to real Flyers a month later.
Of course, there is the possibility that to generate buzz for 6th edition, June’s White Dwarf will have a preview of the Flyer rules (which is going to be one of 6th edition’s mayor selling points I’d reckon). Add a splash release of the mentioned Flyer models so people can buy, assemble and paint them so they can be used immediately when 6th edition is released later that month.
And a small Spearhead-like expansion later this year with a focus on flyers and anti-flyers would make a nice window of opportunity for a second wave of flyer related models, such as models that didn’t make the cut for the June slot, or other flyer related stuff like the IG Hydra flak tank.
Of course, this is all speculation and conjecture on my part based on the current rumours.
To be fair, the 3ed rulebook had entire army lists in it. An appendix for individual flyer rules in the rulebook to bring the codex entries up to speed wouldn’t be unthinkable. GW are going to want something new and shiny to sell with the excitement around 40k that a new edition will inevitably bring. I think that new edition buzz that brings in sales is the only reason they even release rules updates at all any more.
Not unthinkable, but why give it “free” when they can squeeze a few more weeks pocket money out of Li’l Jimmy for the rules to use that £60 fighta model?
White Dwarf have had more rules excerpts in the past, such as the rules for the Dreadknight. They could easily do a few sections of the Flyer rules, but without the full context of the 6th edition rules, would be unplayable.
just wait for one of those really-obvious-what-it-is-but-we’re-not-confirming-anything-honest-guv trailers that they’ve gotten into making. then we know there’s only 1 week to go.
Treat people how you want to be treated, works wonders round here.
does antone know whats going on with the empire battalion?
It’s a bird it’s plane it’s super daylight robbery. It looks like it will be a mega year for GW . Whatever happens they will roll it out over a long period of time to maximise sales. The 6th edition rule book itself will generate a lot of sales from existing lines when people discover that under the new rules their army is not quite as good as it was and the rules now favour other types of units. After we have all bought new stuff they will then release the new goodies that we could have bought in the first place if we had known about it earlier as these new toys are better than the ones we bought to take advantage of the new rules and so on , I’m sure you all get the picture. Think I’d better set up a standing order at the bank.
Haven’t played 40k for over a year now because of the state the current edition is in, but I still have some hope left
On the other hand, WM Colossals and this nifty looking Drop Zone Commander are just around the corner as well. Damn you wallet, y u so little money
More hints are coming in that the 2nd of June will see the release of a new Ork and Space Marine Flyer, and the Necron Night/Doomscythe.
This picture was in May’s WD:
Would make sense to launch 6th just before the school holidays to maximise brain washing time on the oiks left at GW stores while parents shop/sleep/relax
That pic could point to an Orc 2nd Wave as well I guess… ?

Possible but unlikely. The orks have models for pretty much everything don’t they? Besides it’s a little late for a second wave now. Might as well wait for a new dex to release the new models.
Well Orks still have plenty of outdated and/or metal models, such as the warbuggies, mega-nobs and grot artillery. And with the 6th edition starter set on the horizon, the plastic deffkoptas from the AOBR set are coming to an end as well. But still, there have been no hints towards any Ork models besides the Ork flyer.
