Orcs & Goblins
Here is my warband of orcs and goblins, they call themselves the ‘Gore Choppas’. My orc boyz are armed with lots of choppas and are very aggressive. My tactics usually involve my orcs charging up the battlefield in large numbers. When they get into combat they usually do well as after all ‘orcs are made for fighting’. My Night goblins from the Broken Moon tribe aid my orcs with missile support. Whilst my wolf riders were once part of a much larger tribe but drastically shrunk due to an ill-fated coup led by Goblin Big Boss ‘Smallweed’.
My Orcs and Gobbos have taken years to collect. Some of my models are over 10 years old now. Most of my time is spent painting the green blighters. I’m not one to rush a paint job as it is something I rather enjoy. However it can take me ages sometimes to paint just 5 miniatures. I often switch between painting my Orcs and Skaven, although at some point I wouldn’t mind more Ogres. Overall my Orcs and Goblins are my favourite army and the one that sees the most action.
My rough standard 2,000 point army of ‘Gore Choppas’:
CORE TROOPS - 45 Night Goblins with short bows + command + 3 fanatics
- 24 Orcs with 2 choppas + command
- 5 Goblin wolf rider with spears and bows + musician and boss
SPECIAL TROOPS - 10 Black Orcs + command 35
- Orc boar chariot - Goblin spear chukka
RARE TROOPS - Doom diver - 3 River Trolls - Mangler squigs
LORD - Black Orc Warboss, ‘Badrukk’
HEROES - Orc Battle Standard Bearer, ‘Gore-Basher’ - Level 2 Orc shaman, ‘Wizzagg the Bad’ - Level 2 Night goblin shaman, ‘Nibblit’
My favourite unit is the Mangler Squigs. Despite the trials I had making and painting the damn thing it is my favourite unit in terms of pure entertainment value. My Black Orcs are a bit small, I could do with at least 5 more. The essential units are my units of orc boys and night goblins. My shooty machines, the spear chukka and doom diver, have always been useful.
In terms of heroes, I like them all. I have a new custom built Black Orc Warboss made from the plastic kit that I’ve yet to paint. I call him ‘Badrukk’. Before I got this model I used Grimgor (pictured) as my warboss. What a model! If I had to drop one of my 4 heroes it would be the Orc Shaman. I find the battle standard most essential!!! I also have archer boys, a giant and a war wyvern which I also throw into the mix.
In terms of future purchases, I have my eyes on wolf riders. I love fast cavalry units that have all the freedom of the table to cause problems for my opponent. Ideally I would like another (larger) unit of wolf riders to maybe replace the boar chariot in my standard army.
Thanks for sharing @nobbla Always nice to see people’s armies, especially when they are all painted up. This might actually motivate me to share my Dark Elves
I’ve dabbled with orcs on and off for a little while and I have to say that the best way to expand any orc army is to just add lots more boys. I like this list. Lots of fun choices and good balance of CC and shooting. Always wanted to field some mangler squigs, just need to order the old metal ones from GW and stick them on a round base.
For fast cav, I really like spider riders over wolf riders. They treat everything as open terrain and just move through buildings like water, and they have shooting.
I LOVE doom divers!!!! and am glad you have one in your list. Watch my opponent go WTF when I take out 4-5 chaos warriors with no armour save allowed. I always do doomdiver and bolt throwers over rock lobbas.
Dont worry so much about black orcs, I dont think they are quite as good as your bog standard orc for pts value…but they might be a fun addition to your list.
If it were up to me I might be tempted to consolidate general and BSB by just going with gorbad. He does both and does it better than either would individually. for 350 pts he brings a lot to the army and frees up points for other stuff.
Thanks for your post @t9nv3. Cheers and thanks for your advice, in particular that concerning my Black Orcs. I like them but have more of a soft spot for my orcs and goblins, even if they do play up! Also thanks for highlighting Gorbad as another potential general. He is brilliant and a fantastic model as well to boot. I really like spider riders, and will definitely give them another look.
@t9nv3, please share your Dark Elves. I’m keen to see your units, especially your executioners and your sorcerer on the pegasus!
You should actually get more pics done and get them up on Minirama. Your painting is actually quite good. I have to say I’m really impressed with your gobbo/shaman skin and the way your “bone” colours turn out.
I’m looking at some of the things I said in my previous post and thinking that if I had such a well painted warboss, I’d be tempted to run him regardless of whether or not the book has better options!
Took some pics tonight, but they didn’t turn out very well. I’m not very good with cameras. I’ll wait till my wife gets back in town. She’ll be able to get much better results.
Here is an orc i’m working on at the moment. I’m close to finishing 4 of them. I find it takes a few models before I hit my stride. Having painted the current 4 (the first of a new batch) I now know what I want from the rest so it should be quite quick and straight forward from here.
The weather in the UK the last 2 months has been quite dull/dark which makes it hard for me to paint. Natural light is best for me. Luckily in the last week the sun has decided to show itself.
I undercoat with black and then I start with shade colours first. So thats Orchide shade for the skin, Charadon Granite for the metal bits, Mechrite Red for my helmets and armour and Scorched Brown for the rest such as clothes, shoes, bags and wooden bits. My orcs are the ‘Gore Choppas’ so I use a lot of red. Mechrite Red works a dream. I’m going through it quite quickly at the moment and will need a top up soon. The foundation paint is great for painting over black under coat.
From there I use Goblin Green on all the raised area of the skin. Boltgun metal/Chainmail on the weapons. And then various browns etc for the clothes, shoes and bags. Then I use washes liberally.
Then my last stage is to go over everything with the basic colour and then highlights. I’m spending a bit of time on the weapons to make the rusty bits look just right.
Sweet. Stick a goblin hero BSB on a gigantic spider in the river trolls. i use this tactic alot, smashes the living poo out of units
Some more photos here for show. I’ve got here a few of my black orcs and one of my river trolls. I’ve given the river troll a red nose as if he has a cold. I like the colour of my bases to contrast and I’ve did this by having the chaos black/scorched brown base colours sit under that of a mix of flock (standard grass and dead grass flock). Ideally I would like my gaming table (if I ever got one) to have this colour scheme.
Cheers @rosspot83, good tip!
Been trying to paint this banner design today free hand. I wanted it to look wild and primitive but also to still look good. I think I’ve done OK. Maybe later I shall define the outline a little bit more with a darker colour.
Nah leave it, it looks good. since when have orcs used definition. Defemation maybe, definition nah.
@rosspot83 – cheers geezer!!
It has been a while since I’ve given my orcs a lick of paint. So, today I had a go at free hand painting again though this time on my army banner. Not perfect I know but not too bad I think. Since taking the photo I’ve also sorted out the edges on my banner to make them neater.
I also glued sand on my orc bases and base coated the bases for my trolls.
I’m nearly there. Next up after my infantry and battle standard are finished I shall turn my attention to my Warboss. All good.
Ohhh I like that!
