Hi I am putting a IG army together and could you help me out? Am I right in saying that 3 leman russ tanks make one Hvy unit?
I would love any advice for putting a 1600 pt army together.

    Thanks all.

After fighting IG almost very week, its safe to say vets in a chimera work. People use Vendettas more then leman russ tanks because the can get a cross the broad fast with three twin linked lascannons, can be used as a taxi, and cheaper on the pts. Guardsman Marbo I like because he can pop up one inch from an enemy model with a demo charge. You can have 3 tanks in one unit but it hurts on the pts.

Don’t stress out about life, you never come out alive.

Well three tanks in one unit are pretty stupid and after playing IG for a 5 years i found it never works.
Yes you can take more tanks but they get wrecked easier.
See your choice is to build a winning or to go by fluff of a give reg..

Brimlock Engineers, Tanith First and Only, Catachan II. (10,500 points. No super heavies)
The Emperor may be able to walk on water but Sly Marbo can swim through land.

Three tank russ squadrons are slightly counter productive unless you have enough cover to always have one in cover and one popping it smoke, that way you get three turns of cover save and two tanks firing while moving, but its more likely you’ll have them in pairs, or even just a single russ is pretty tough to bring down unless you get round its sides or rear.

One of the biggest strengths of the IG is how you use your orders and on which units – ‘first rank fire’ is almost wasted on a unit of veterans, but put it on a massive combined or conscript squad and you could be rolling 150 dice for your shooting, likewise ‘bring it down’ on a squad with one heavy weapon isn’t using its full potential, save it for the heavy or special weapons teams, ‘Incoming’ and ‘get back in the fight’ are perhaps a bit underused given how powerful they are but they’re both a bit too situational to give meaningful advice on, you’ll probably be able to see when you need to use them as it happens.

One way that leman Russ squadrons can be deployed/moved to give them better survivability against ranged attacks is to place the Russ at the back facing the opposite direction to the front two/one. Placing the Russ at the back in the opposite direction will essentially give you 14/13 armour all round.

The other advantage to squadrons is the ability to shoot through/draw los through your other tanks as if they weren’t there!

As for your 1600 point list, what are you looking to do? Be competitive or play casually? Because guard do both well, and I equate russes to fun rather than part of a reliable competitive army.

Sorry I shouldn’t say being competitive is comparable to not having fun….
