    Hi all,

I recently got into Warmachine and I decided to play Khador. I picked up epic Irusk as I liked the model and was thinking about building a tier list so I picked up the Behemoth as well. The problem is that we then decided to play a 15pt game and I had so few models I left myself very exposed and I lost the warcaster in every game.

We are now expanding to 20 pts. I have decided to drop the Behemoth for now as its a very large points sink, but I am not sure what to fill my army up with. Can anyone offer some adivce on good models for epic Irusk? I have been looking at man-o-war units, but I am worried that they are not in the tier list? OR should I not be so worried about the tier lists and just pick whatever?

Part of me regrets not picking up the Butcher now!

Keep in mind all the following advice will be from a newbie whos studied the game but hasnt played much yet.

Irusk, especially Epic Irusk, doesnt seem like a Warjack caster to me. He has a lot of abilities that buff warrior models and units, so get those.

As for the tier lists, keep in mind that the bonuses are good, but not mandatory. In such a small game i definitely would not invest almost half of it (counting his warjack points) into one warjack.

If youve played Warhammer 40k, looking at eIrusks Tier list he seems to favor an Imperial Guard playstyle, lots of little weak troops backed up by 1-2 heavy cannons. His spells also back that up, with things like Energizer letting your entire army move (which is obviously more efficient the more things move from it) and Artifice of Deviation allowing you to control who gets to charge and where.

If you want to stay in tier (and given his personal abilities, i would) I would go with a lot of winterguard and some kayzay assassins with their underboss backed up by a single Destroyer, which you can upkeep Fire for Effect on to allow him to act as artillery for your army.

If the game goes up to 30+ points, then i would replace the Destroyer with Behemoth, though keep in mind Behemoth cant be bonded with eIrusk.

lastly, if you dont mind doing some reading, this website has a rundown on all the units and their strength and weaknesses. Just be sure to put mkii before the name of the model youre looking for, and if youre looking for an epic warcaster put e before their name

    Ok thanks! All looks good!

    So Im thinking the following

    Epic Irusk
    Destroyer (or perhaps a decimator)
    2 x Winterguard (6 man) with a Rocketeer
2 x Winterguard Mortar (or perhaps swap one for a field gun)

We aren’t going to use tiers next game, but from what I can see thats a tier 2 list where I can then add in an officer to one of the Winterguard units for free.

  • Avatar Image baval118p said 3 months, 1 week ago:

I looked at the Decimator, but it only has 1 point more pow for 4 inches less range and no AOE. With fire for effect all the hits of the aoe are automatically boosted, so definitely want the destroyer.

Other than that i have no idea about the winterguard. I like the look of the fieldgun myself, but ill let people with more experience than me comment on that.

And yep, thats a tier 2 list. In a 35 point list you could add a few assassins and behemoth and be all tiered out.

@baval proves once again he is more than just an awesome avatar of the zero knuckle. All his input is sound.
I asked a friend who plays Khador and he suggested a destroyer, full kayazays, and min winterguard with joe at 20 points. The destroyer with fire for effect and the bond is to be your bait while the kayazays with battle lust go on the offensive. Winterguard can be accurate ranged attackers and play as irusk’s budyguard

The way to look at a Supreme Kommandant Irusk list is that you need to work in waves, with each warjack/unit that operates at a particular range getting buffs as the enemy gets closer.

Here’s how I normally build that type of Irusk list:

Mortars – These get Fire for Effect and shell the opponent at max range, taking out infantry or trying to get a direct hit on a heavy Warjack.
Remember you can use Tactical Supremacy to shuffle the Mortars forward 3″ to get better positioning.

Destroyers – These are (IMO) the best Warjack for Irusk. you can boost them with Fire for Effect and they shoot like a (more accurate) Mortar as the enemy gets nearer.

Winter Guard – No need to UA or any upgrades. Get a full unit of 10 and use Fire for Effect to make them shoot a devastating CRA (combined ranged attack) at anything that has weathered the Mortar and Destroyer fire.

If you opponent STILL has something worth fighting at this stage, you can power up the Destroyer with Focus and run the Winter Guard in with Battle Lust on them.

Supreme Kommandant Irusk requires that you plan your strategy each turn… and remember stick to the plan… concentrate on a target and decimate it, then move on to the next. Pick your targets and remove anything that can damage you that turn (or the following turn) and Irusk is a tough cookie to beat.

    Thanks foir the advice everyone.

I guess mass Winterguard it is!

If you are planning on expanding to the 35 pnt mark you could do worse than the recent 2 Player starter box and the conversion kit for Black Ivan. Also it is a great way to get a friend into the game if you can split it with them.

eIrusk actual has some love for those Man-O-Wars and Black Ivan is a nice ranged and melee option.

One neat trick with Fire for Effect that you might like with the units you have there is to cycle it. Upkeep it from last round on one unit, use that unit before activating Irusk. Then activate Irusk and cast it on the other unit so you get twice the boosted fun.

If you’re going for eIrusk and the Winterguard then here’s a few tips:

The Spriggan is your friend. It’s got the armour of a Behemoth, two ranged shots to put into enemy units, flares that turn off stealth, a lance that makes it Mat 8 on the charge and Bulldoze which is incredibly broken. Just imagine….your opponent sets up his caster so that there’s a jack in front of you, then another large base behind it to stop you slamming either into his caster…. no worries. Load your spriggan up with 3 focus and cast Energizer for 3. Now move Spriggan to a clearer but slightly jammed up angle… make sure you’re directly in front of the caster and perhaps just clipping the other jack’s bases if you charge….as you charge you push each of those jacks 2″ directly away from you as you get to them AND continue the charge. You can even use this to charge a jack and get an opposing caster in reach range….then trash the jack and let them deal with a spriggan if they can.

Kayazy Assassins also your friend (with the underboss). Artifice of Deviation gives them the pathfinder they need, Battle Lust gives them the hitting power. Admittedly you’re losing the Iron Flesh of pIrusk that makes them RIDICULOUS but Def 14 Stealth or Def 16 against melee is still pretty good by anyone’s standards. Tactical Supremacy combined with their inbuilt Parry can also create horrible situations where your opponent has to turn their backs on your main force or take free strikes when they walk out of the melee range of the Kayazy you just walked behind them.

Also….have to disagree on Winterguard not needing the Unit Attachment. The Standard Bearer gives the whole unit a spray attack. Combine this with Kovnik Joe and it is devastating. Your RAT 5 Winterguard (With Joe’s boosted to hit rolls) are suddenly an effective RAT 7-9 and can hit 2-3 infantry per shot. This may not sound like much but it can rip some forces to shreds unless they’re running jack/beast heavy.

Finally….consider the Iron Fang Pikemen as a screen for Irusk. Reach infantry with Critical Knockdown, they move as fast as he does, will spend most of the game at armour 18 and with the UA have pathfinder on the charge as well as the minifeat (this has been errata’d from the book/card, I suggest reading the PP rules forums).

    ……I’ve rambled enough now :D

Thanks for all the advice guys!

My game has been moved up to tomorrow, but unfortunately I have been let down on model delivery. Therefore I decided to count up what I got and see what I could proxy in. I cane up with a few lists…

    List 1.

    Epic Irusk
    Destroyer
    1 x Winterguard (5)
    2 x Mortars
    1 x Widowmakers

Basically I would camp in one spot, using fire for effect on units that can inflict the most damage. By casting it on a morat at the end of the first round, I can then fire that morat first in round two before recasting on the other mortar. The plan would be to punch a hole in the defence to set up shots against the warcaster.

    List 2.

    Epic Irusk
    Destroyer
    1 x Winterguard (10)
    2 x Mortar
    Kovinik Joe

Same as above, but using Joe to bolster the winterguard.

    List 3

    Prime Butcher
    1 x MOW Shocktroops (5)
    1 x Destroyer
    1 x Widowmakers
    1 x Widowmaker Marksman

The shocktroopers and Butcher head towards the warcaster whilst the other units provide covering fire, breaking holes in defensive lines.

    List 4

    Epic Butcher
    1 x Juggernaut
    2 x Doom Reavers
    1 x Fenris
    1 x Manhunter

It was late when I came up with this, so I consider it an experiment. Basically I just run at the enemy and keep my fingers crossed. The lack of shooting could be an issue but it should be fun to play at the very least

    List 5

    Epic Sorscha
    1 x Beast 09
    1 x Destroyer
    1 x Winterguard (10)

Another experimental list based around capitalising on ESorchas double damage after armour feat. The winterguard were added to take advantage of Combined Arms. I would combined fire on the turn of Sorschas feat, which should hopefully kill a light jack or lightly armoured Warcaster (Cryx springs to mind).

I plan on playing every list if possible and I will provide updates on how they did! Critique is always welcome!

for list 3 you could rearrange it to the following (you have option of swapping out the widowmaker for kell bailock)

    Khador
    20+6 points, 19 models

The Butcher of Khardov +6 points
    * Destroyer 9 points

    3 Man-O-War Shocktroopers 6 points
    Widowmaker Marksman 2 points
10 Winter Guard Infantry 6 points
    * Winter Guard Officer & Standard 2 points
    * 1 Winter Guard Rocketeer 1 point

    Additional Rules

Eligible for Heart of Darkness, tier 1

  • Avatar Image brass17p said 2 months, 3 weeks ago:

Hey tahsnadeen, you actually one point short due to the tier. Tier 1 reduces the point cost on Man-O-War Shocktroopers, which leaves room for butchers best friend the wardog. Butcher loves him going to DEF 18 / ARM 22 in melee with Iron Flesh and the doggie.

    Tiers: 1
    The Butcher of Khardov (*6pts)
    * Destroyer (9pts)
    * War dog (1pts)
    Man-o-war Shocktroopers (Leader and 2 Grunts) (5pts)
Winter Guard Infantry (Leader and 9 Grunts) (6pts)
    * Winter Guard Infantry Officer & Standard (2pts)
    * 1 Winter Guard Infantry Rocketeer (1pts)
    Widowmaker Marksman (2pts)

Just out of curiosity .. what factions/casters/lists are you going to play against? Might bring up some more detailed advice, compared to these “all-round” suggestions =)

  • Avatar Image echilda24p said 2 months, 3 weeks ago:

@baummonster There will be three opponents. One is playing Cryx using Lich Lord Terminus with the deathjack and a slayer, plus something else to make up points.

The second plaer is also Cryx, althoguh I think he may have bought some Trollbloods recently, so he may play them. If its Cryx I imagine it will be an expansion of the battlebox set.

The third player is a Cygnar player. He bought loads of models off ebay so has a very wide and unpdredictable army list. I know he likes to play pHaley and the warjack that lets you push people away and then slam them if both attacks hit. I don’t know the name.

There are three others who aren;t attending the next time we play. They field Menoth, Rhulic Mercs and Everblight.
