Hi there! I’ve finally decided to start playing Warmachine largly in part from all the great videos supplied by this site as well as seeing it played down at my LGS. I decided to start with Cygnar mostly because I like the color blue but also the look and feel of the models. I got the battle box and ordered in the Black 13th for Cygnar to start since it’s a quick way to get to 15 points fast. People however tend to play 20 point games at my store so I was wondering what people would recommend getting to get my army up to 20 points?

    pStryker +6
    Lancer 6
    Charger: 4
    Ironclad: 7
    Black 13: 4
    Total: 15
    Help?

Your 15 point list is very good for battlebox plus extras. Stryker probably can’t handle more jacks so unless you want to sideline one of the jacks you already own as you expand, it would be best to stick to units and solos. If you want to expand without doing any replacements I suggest stormblades or rangers.
Stormblades are electric knights for lack of a better description. they are strong and accurate melee fighters that pack a big punch and even have short ranged lighting guns for more skirmishy situations. They have an officer and standard available as well as storm gunner weapon attachments that can add different advantages to the unit as you expand.
Rangers are fairly basic ranged troops with the kind of terrain management you expect from a unit with that name. They have one highly valuable asset though, if they get within 5″ of an enemy, everything else in your army gets +2 to hit ranged attacks against those models. It can be beneficial to send one or two brave souls running out into the opposing force’s face to buff the rest of your army’s accuracy.
There are also several solos, mercenaries, and jacks you can take, but those two units can be pretty useful all around.

    Beasts of War Warmachine/Hordes Tzar.
Check out my painting log if you have the time.

Thank you Dais for the quick reply!

I was considering the Stormblades since they seem to be a nice little 5pt unit that could work well with Stryker Quake.

Other units I was looking at are
    The JrWM (Junior) 3
    Squire 2

    or
    Major Catherine Laddermore 5

Thinking of the middle 2 at the moment since I’m considering switching over to pNemo in a bit if pStryker doesn’t impress me much.

Squire and journeyman are great. I can only say good things about them, but I thought you might want some more bodies on the table.
Laddermore is …well she’s a pretty model. She has a lot of tricks and is a fairly good melee solo with lots of versatility, but 5 points is hard to justify for her at times.

The Black 13th are the best option to go to 15pts from the Battle Box. Really help Stryker deal with Stealth and provide some good anti-infantry/solo.

For me persoanlly ar 20pts I would consider dropping the Charger and Black 13th and get Gun Mages + UA and Stormblades. Gives you some bodies on the board and good shooting unit which combat stealth high def troops and a decent Melee unit

Well something to know about me, I’m cheap. ;) So getting to 20pts with as little spent as possible right off the bat is what I’m looking for. My Fiancee already thinks I’m crazy for my hobby as it is, trying to show her how much less expensive it is compared to WH40k like I used to play.

The Current list I think I’m building toward for this 20pt started list is:
    pStryker +6
    Lancer 6
    Ol’Rowdy 9

    Jr Warcaster 3
    Charger 4

    Black 13

Putting the charger on Jr should give it the focus it needs to run well while keeping back a bit to keep the Jr safer. And with the focus pressure off of Stryker have him be a little more casty or give a little more focus love to his jacks. Don’t have a Rowdy persey but I’m confident in my conversion ability coming over from 40k. Thoughts on the list/tactic ideas?

Whats with everyone starting Cygnar now, they are evolving into the SMurfs of PiP :D

Anyway .. be careful about the positioning of your soon-to-be warcaster. They can be one-shotted by alot of stuff and people will try to elimate the threat of his “marshalled” warjack by going for the Journeyman directly

spinning all of Heaven and Earth, purely to grant the wishes of man

Hey no smurfs for me, I was blood Angels before. Did a different scheme on my Cygnar, going for a black and gold look for them to do something a little different and stand out a little from the other Cygnar players down at my shop.

Tried out my battle box today and so far I am not loving Stryker but I did win 1 out of three.

To continue with topic, this is my 15pt Cygnar General Adept Nemo Tier-1 list for my slow-grow league here at my local game shop. I call this a ‘Shock-Therapy’ list:

    eNemo: +6 WJ Pts
    Thunderhead: 12
    Firefly: 5
    Stormsmith Storm Tower: 2
    Stormsmith Stormcaller: 1
    Stormsmith Stormcaller: 1

    Comments and advice always welcome!

    @carlstrack01
eNemo loves heavy warjacks, I highly suggest getting one or two more before anything else.
I’m a little torn on the inclusion of the thunderhead at such a low points level. It can present a great assassination threat but the T-head isn’t much of a front line jack and certainly can’t handle two opposing heavies on his own. You’re really going to have to try and be slippery with this list to sneak an early caster kill.

I’m back with a little more experience under my belt and I think I have found a play style I like. I am now playing 20 point games and really like the addition of troops to my lists. It’s also very true what people say about how just changing the warcaster makes the same army play very differently. My new (to me) 20 point list is:

    eCaine +5
    Ironclad 7

    Jr 3
    Charger 4

    reinholt 1
    Boomhowler & co (small) 6
    Black 13 4

I like this list because it uses Boomhowler as a screen for eCaine and the 13 and lets me bide my time getting close enough for an assassination run on the enemy caster while the Jr runs the charger at peak efficiency letting Caine hog most of his own focus for gate crashing or extra shots. Though I kind of admit I totally miss snipe in this list for my charger I have to keep reminding myself the B13 have it for themselves.

    @goblinguy78
I’m glad to see things are progressing so well for you. I like eCaine quite a bit myself, he’s a dangerous man. As you progress to higher points consider adding the squire and swapping the ironclad for Ol’ Rowdy one of the forthcoming Avenger warjacks. The squire buys you an extra attack on feat turn while the avenger and Rowdy provide either longer-range or more focus-efficient knockdowns. The ironclad is still good in a points-intensive list, but two points can be a small price to pay to buy a more reliable way to produce los or def 5 for your enemy on your feat turn. Boomhowler’s unit can be a great tarpit to hold the line while you set up your kill and we all know the B13 are great so I think your units are set up well.

Hey I am also looking to start playing Cygnar again . I started playing this game when it was first released so I have the starter box and some pieces with the old prime book and escalation :( . When I was looking into paying i saw a new rule book was out and also ton more pieces. Going to need help coming up with a competitive list

The list that i have come up with using the stuff i have withe some other stuff that looks fun to play i came up with.

    Pcain
    Ironclad, Hunter, Hunter/charger
squire, JR, Reinholt, Arlen strangeways, B13, Gunmage capt adept
    Gun mages/ officer

I kind of want to include rangers/ Eiryss but not sure what to drop. every thing i read pretty much states rangers are connected to the hip with cain

Also this is 35 and from what i can see tournament is 50 points so what do i need to compete. I hope people don’t say those giant $100 pieces :( . Looking to play Ecain or siege with the 50 point army. Did some maths on this and the 35 point listed should cost me about $100 because I do have some of these pieces.

for what its worth i do have pstriker and phaley but from stuff i have been reading the epic versions are the main ones to see play so going to try and use pcain for now

Any tips and help would be appreciated cheers

  • Avatar Image dais736p said 10 months, 2 weeks ago:

@kizersoze Your list looks pretty solid. if I would make any change I would exchange the gun mage solo for another 2 point solo or two stormsmiths; He is ok, but he is somewhat redundant with the gun mage unit and Lynch there. Rangers are quite good and I can see why you would want them in a list, but they aren’t required with pCaine; they tend to be first pick with eCaine though.
You should start small and get reacquainted with the rues. Don’t rush into higher points levels until you feel you are ready. Tournaments can be a lot of fun, but I wouldn’t suggest you get involved with serious 50 point tournaments until you know your models well and can play smoothly and at a consistent pace. If you have your heart set on competitive play make sure you are familiar with the steamroller 2012 rules and know the scenarios and win conditions well.
pStryker is a solid well-rounded caster. He is maligned more for being vanilla and dull than being bad. His epic version is well-received for being the melee warcaster of choice for the faction.
pHaley is a strong caster that is sometimes overshadowed by her phenomenal epic version. She has come into light on her own with the new colossal, but has always had strong lists without it as well. She has a good spell list that favors buffs for ranged attacks and damaging spells.

  • Avatar Image kizersoze1p said 10 months, 2 weeks ago:

I am not concerned with entering tournaments right away just do not want to put money and time into pieces that are not as effective as others for certain jobs :) for example the GMCA, by the way when is the right time to but that guy in a list. I just want to get something that works in a way that would simulate towards tournament scenario then just for fun to learn faster.

What are some solo’s that are good for 2 points with cygnar
harlen versh? gorman di wulfe? rhupert? Madelyn? or do i try and cut/ change something to get eiryss in? Also seen people rate aiyana and holt but they are 4 points :(

also from what i gathered so far both versions of eiryss are good just have to be used differently. Is there a general opinion on what ver goes with certain casters or is it all in the list and play style of the players?

only other aspects left concerning me are colossus and infantry.. Information i seem to find it depends on list and play style so maybe i just need to learn how to play them. Was looking at Precursor Knights vs sword knights. seems the precurser knights are better with cain because spell ward is not wasted as much as with other warcasters. Will i need to buy a colossus or will i just need to have like 4 hunters to take care of it.

Thanks for all the help. I took another look at PHaley because i do have a lander jack and i am sure there is overlap in the lists to use for skirmishes to get used to the casters
