Warmachine General Discussion
The Steamroller 2012 tournament rules have been available for about a month now with one major event behind them. The steamroller rules can be found here: http://privateerpress.com/files/SR2012%20Rules%20V1.2.pdf. Templecon gave players only a short time to adjust so it isn’t a great example of the environment but it was a good test for the new scenarios. I think Adepticon, Lock &Load, and Gencon will show us much more, but we don’t want convention season to be over before we get a full understanding of how things will change do we? Personally, I like most of the changes. I still think character restrictions are too strict, but like that they are optional. For me, it would be perfect if by default a single character was allowed in both lists but all others were restricted with options to tighten or loosen the restrictions at the TO’s discretion. Reserves strike me as a very cool addition, but adding points to a list that may or may not be in the game make for difficult choices. I look forward to seeing what kind of support people chose for these less reliable segments of their armies that add real value but are not needed every game. The killbox change was very smart in my opinion, they put more focus back into the objectives while keeping the pressure on. Changing the 12 inch limit to 10 inches adds a deceptively large area to the safe zone and helps back line casters stay away from aggressive assassins. Interactive objectives is a terrific idea but 6 different objectives might be too many for players to familiarize themselves with, time will tell. In the future I would like to see the journeyman league rules and steamroller rules developed concurrently to add some consistency to organized play and add some of the more wild changes to steamroller to casual play. I think reinforcements and interactive objectives could be a blast in the last week or two of a league. So what are your thoughts? What do you like and dislike? What would you do to your winning lists to adapt to the new scenarios?
I like the new format- the 2 issues I see are the addition of reserves and objective denial.
The reserves I feel are cool but of course requires you to have more figures which is an issue for new players. I didnt do tournies because i could just about scrape together one 35pt list. Now youll need 2 lists plus reserves. My current reserves are to make up the points rather than necessarily the best reserve selection.
The objective denial aspect is tricky- to many types as you mentioned and I can see an issue if someone runs up camping an objective and then blows up all the other ones
I like the char restriction- fufills fluff and stops the cut n paste lists you could end up with. Of course it also means youll need more figs
Overall verdict i think its good
I think they again did a good job at providing something for both the “small-time” players/organizers and the hardcore, tournament-focussed ones.
I haven’t been at a large-scale tournament yet, but I suppose most players participating in these won’t have much problems fielding enough troops and getting confused over all the rules/objectives
