Should I avoid Wood Elves? (7 posts)

    Hello!

I have just started Warhammer after years of disregard. I have found myself facing a new rulebook and I have some unfortunately neglected figures. In this collection of models I have about 600pts worth of wood elves. Now I find Wood Elves unbelievably cool. Unfortunately I can’t win games on an awesome factor. So.
    Now onto the point!

Should I use Wood Elves as my new starting army?

They can be used, but the truth is that there are very few generals able to use them well. Most of the current Wood Elf armies are composed of Tree-kin; tree-men; plus support. Any army that actually relies upon elves to do the damage are using hit and run tactics. and as the army now stands it takes an extremely bold and experienced commander to use the fragile; high speed; and low model count army effectively.

If you are looking for a starting army let me suggest:
    - Empire: an army that will let you try just about anything
    - Orcs & Goblins: as an easy to play but hard to master army
    - Vampire Counts: they will never run away on you but their troops suck
    - Warriors of Chaos: tough as nails troops

    Good Luck!

Nah ignore that, Wood elves are a great army. You need a solid block of eternal guard with a noble or highborn to make them stubborn as your anvil. and glade guard as your hammer. The glade guard should hammer the emeny in volley mode. I find odd numbers is the best frontage as Warhammer runds up so for ranks that are 7 wide you get four of tehm firing in the rank 3+. You have to move wood elves alot but as they can now move sideways and backwards this is not a problem. Dryads make a nice assistance to your eternal guard. and scouts, waywatchers and glade riders can potentially slow your enemy down whilst also shooting your enemy effectivly (especially waywatchers). With the tree kin you also have access to some heavy hitters, especially with a wild rider hero on a great stag in the unit. Give them a try and have fun. They aren’t the easiest army, but they are far and away one of the most rewarding and satisfying once you master them. My friends hate playing them.

Wood Elves are the rock n roll stars of the Warhammer World. They are utterly cool! I’m not a Wood Elf expert but there are many gamers in the BoW forums who are. Have a quick search and you’ll find some great Wood Elf army lists. There was one old list I spotted weeks ago which apparently when used ‘never lost a battle’. Furthermore, I recently came across a few fun videos on Youtube by ‘JoeyWarhammer’. She is collecting Wood Elves are her starter army and seems to be having a good time. Maybe worth a look?

Wood Elves are due an update and certain units are a bit ‘difficult’ at the moment. However, I wouldn’t rule them out as a starter army. With the right combination of units and magic items they’re utterly deadly. If I were you, i’d go for it!

Thank you all. I will most certainly continue with my Wood Elves.

Excellent! another wood elf player. ask for tactics with them any time and if you discover any let me know

I have a very good win record with my elves, using only (on average) 1 forest spirit unit, and that’s a shock troop unit of dryads, the main mistake most generals make is to try and make their army conform to regular tactics, instead of conforming around it’s, and although you can lose a lot of troops in not a lot of time, the most fun I’ve had is doing exactly that to the enemy first (my Dryads are babes, ran down the same unit of Black Orcs with Grimgor 4 times in separate games xD)

that last bit of light is always the hardest to snuff out…
