As part of Infinity Week, Andy and Mike take a look at the Haqqislam Starter Set.
Cool models Like them a lot, and as said elsewhere I would double up their use as they would make a great Necromunda gang. (Sorry to bring up another company’s game! doh!)
Really liked the look of Infitity and the game play from the tutorial videos last year.
Great video! Models look really nice. What are the mold lines like on the models? Do they take a while to clean up?
They range from non existent to pretty mild definitely not something that will take hours of filing.
Great, good to hear, I hate cleaning models.
One thing mentioned here briefly that hasn’t been gone into yet is the SWC costs. You get a SWC point to use for ever 50pts of your army. So a 300pt army have 6 SWC points to use for certain weapons, gear, or Lt. So say you want a HMG, for one type of troop its 1.5 pts cost but for another it may be 2pts. Lieutenants can cost you SWC and Hackers too.
No light flame-thrower for Janissaries I am afraid.
What I love in haqqislam is how dependable they are, their specialists are performing superbly because of their high WIP and their troops are equally dependant to keep their position under heavy fire because of it, they have many choices of light and medium troops that can fill many variable positions and can contest the table at strategic locations, their HI (Heavy Infantry essentially powered armour troops) are few, but nothing to overlook in the battlefield.
If you read Haqqislams background you may find this is not the stereotype they fall in.
I would just like to second PS’s comment, Haqqislam isn’t about religious conquest in the fluff. You might also want to look up the real meaning of the word ‘Jihad’. It means struggle, and in Islam is actually more about an individuals personal ‘struggle’ to strive to live in the way of Allah (God). Not the corrupted ideology some in within and outside Islam would have you believe. Back to the fluff I’d say Haqqislam are actually the closest thing to ‘good guys’ in Infinity as they’re trying to improve the lives of people and not via religous dogma either but by science and medicine in particular. Still they don’t have ninja’s!!!
These guys look a lot better than I thought model wise. I assume Andy’s ‘religious burning, like they all seem to want to do’ was a referance to Menoth, who these guys might be a more peaceful mirror of
If you want religious fanatics, you have to go with the knightly orders, not the overall very sensible and level-headed haqqislamites.
or the Hassassins.
Actually the Hassassins are the Haqqislam secret service of sorts, while religious, I would not call them fanatics.
cold blooded killers or defenders of Haqqislam faith and integrity yes.
Whoa, whoa. You wouldn’t call a guy who is willing to sacrifice his life to kill his target because he knows his place in paradise is secured by that act, a fanatic? I could be wrong, but isn’t that how the Fiday operate?
Don’t get me wrong, I think the faction is cool, and that the developers should be applauded for their boldness in today’s political climate.
Its a bit more complicated, while you could call them fanatics and what you say is described as that in the Fidays background, Hassassin sect is more deep than that, indeed Fidays are the least “bright” of the sects operatives.
Fiday and Fiday hero are the only two choices of troops in Haqq army wich are “made” for such playstyle. But there’s Speculo Killer in CA who has almost same profile (plus a monofilament CCW!).
IMO it’s only you, who chooses how to play the units, ’cause i’ve seen Fiday in one game as a mine layer, who made his cheerleaders safe, while Ragik with HMG dropped and exterminated the ALEPH force.
As for me the quintessence of “religious fanatics” in Haqq force are Dailami (specially PZfaust one!) – it’s the unit wich firstly moves to or attacks the oposing unit and then he kills it or he dies.
Hope you’ll enjoy your Infinity playstyle!=)
That’s right… the Knights of (unpronouncable)-neciento are cracking… you can all laugh at me trying to pronuce that tomorrow!
Warren is pretty set on putting together a force of Knights, I’m looking forward to some good games against my Ariadna… or ALEPH… or Japanese Sectoral… how many armys will I start before the end of this week?
Now taking bets!!!
I might have the same problem, though I’ll definitely get a Haqqislam Starter to try out the game. And maybe an Ariadna one to do Demos and get Friends hooked.
Yep… I drew the analogy with Menoth.
It seems that many other games go directly for a stereotypical “religious fanatic” when dealing with any overtly relgious theme in games.
I like the way that Haqqislam is portrayed in Infinity. The proponents of science, medicine and understanding… it’s refreshing!
Indeed it is.
Ah, but where dedication ends and fanaticism starts? The hassasins aren’t really any more fanatical than than any other special force, they do not do suicide missions…mainly because there’s no such thing as suicide mission anymore unless you’re fighting the aliens or you’re some poor ariadnan schmuck. When death is just a break from life sacrifice loses it’s value I’d say.
I thought that suicide missions is what Fiday did…? Am I wrong? :s
No, but Fiday isn’t the pinnacle or the core of Hassassins bahram, they are the waste the failures, those that instead of been send in their way, are used as hitmans, but even they are not used for mindless suicide attacks, they are used for high profile missions that their sacrifice send a message.
On the other hand the core of the bahram, are professional soldiers ready to give their lives for Burak.
Yes. But thanks to Cubes, or pre-mission personality uploads, suicide mission just means you have to wait till the new body is ready for you (well, not always so easy, but I suspect for small, elite forces it’s easier to pay for one than for PanOceania to resurrect every single fusilier, though “death insurance” which is part of the soldier’s social insurance paid by the army is still there for them.). If I recall, Hussein, the named Fiday hero, was resurrected six or seven times already after each suicide mission.
Cool beans, guys. Love this fluff.
It´s an old discussion since the beggining of the game, probably because haqqislam is the “islamic” culture. The muttawiah are troops with even more fanatical profile…but ,curiously, nobody calls “fanatic” the rest of troops of the different armies, even when all of them are” willing to sacrifice his life” for their nation/ideas/way-of-life. It depends of the point of view . Probably the only ones that shouldn´t be defined as that are the Aleph ones.
IIRC the historical Assissins were also used by the Crusaders when the situation favoured both parties.. The relationship between Christianity and Islam was more dynamic and subtle than simply knocking seven bells out of each other for a few centuries.
It could be argued, as it was on a TV series last year, that we owe modern western society to Islam. Without the repositry of knowledge of the Islamic world the Renaissance would have been totally different for example.
Western culture throughout the Middle-Ages flowered because of the contact with Islam and its pursuit of knowledge. The fluff as presented in the videos seems spot on imho.
Could even argue that without the contact with Islam there would have been no rock and roll baby. lol
Who knows, our math are founded on their.
