A new TV show set in the DC Universe is on the way. Powerless, the first straight up comedy in the setting, moves people away from the the high octane adventures of superheroes and into the everyday lives of those who have to deal with them.
The show explores the lives of employees of an insurance company, who just happen to live in a world where superheroes are real and weird events are common.
In a recent interview with DC Entertainment, cast member Alan Tudyk described the show as being “an office comedy.” “There’s a real element to it juxtaposed against these superheroes. The idea that superheroes might need to go to the bathroom, bring the real world in.”
The casting certainly looks promising, with the aforementioned Alan Tudyk playing the “villain” of the series, alongside series protagonist Vanessa Hudgens and her friend played by Danny Pudi.
This, of course, isn’t the only superhero themed comedy on the way as Marvel recently announced their plans for a TV show based around Damage Control, the overworked clean-up crew of the Marvel universe.
I believe that the current popularity of superheroes means that the genre is more than ready to have a few laughs at its expense. Superhero stories are full of the fantastic, and the best way to turn that into comedy is simply to present it along with the mundane. I’m really looking forward to seeing how Powerless pulls this off. The casting looks good and the set-up is promising, and with the DC universe of super-powered goings on to draw upon, there are plenty of story opportunities to be found here.
What sort of things do you hope to see happening in this new DC show?
