On theme alone, this game caught my eye on Kickstarter. Loving all things potentially pirate related, Privateers! The Golden Decade seemed to have all the things I love in a board game.
Yes, there’s competition, but this has so much more- there’s bartering, resource management, war, and piracy!
In this game by Enrico Manlio Ottolini, you assume the role as a captain on the high seas. The type of Captain is up to you. Are you on the straight and narrow? Are you more of a smuggler? Or perhaps you are a straight up pirate? Each type of Captain offers a different play style, allowing for different game experiences in their own right. The game can be played by 2-5 people and is played across a series of hexagonal tiles.
You will sail around the seas, visiting colonies to buy, sell and trade anything from goods and treasures to hired hands, crews, and supplies for your ship. You will be at the mercy of the wind and weather and must pay close attention to the alliances in the ports you visit. Some are friends, and others are foes- your reception in these ports will be quite different accordingly.
This charming game seems to capture the feel of the grand scale pirate game that we got to participate in at AdeptiCon this year, neatly packed into one little board game- but there’s nothing stopping you from dressing the part!
Will you be seeking adventure on the high seas in Privateers! The Golden Decade?
