Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought

Oh now here’s a different looking dread. This is the Contemptor Pattern Dreadnought from Forge World and I got to say I like it allot, but is it 40K Space Marine?
It’s based on the Pre Heresy Dreadnought and the kit looks great and very posable, infact BoW Romain thinks it’s “F-ing Great” and that this is how a Dread should be, but I like the tin can dread.
If this was for another game I’d be all over it singing its praises because it looks great... but it feels strange to me. Even though it’s based on Pre Heresy design I'm just not sure if it’s 40K. Perhaps I’m just suffering from pushback and in a month or so I’ll be loving this.

Looks more futuristic than the current tin can dreadnaughts! I’m liking the, although they are very reminiscent of the recent Dreaknight styleeeee! 😛
look further down nobzey and tasker basically explain why it looks the way it looks. They were made in a Golden Age of technology (M15-M25) were machines* and humans built technology that most people in the 40th millennium dont understand anymore – the understanding got lost during the Age of Strife ( a side effect of the birth of Slaanesh that covered the whole universe into warp-storms ) in late M25 early M26 and a rebellion of the Iron Men (quelled by the Men of Stone) and the Dreadknight is built after planes that were designed at the very same… Read more »

Indeed very “I’m one of those 10 000 Dreadnoughts waiting in the catacombs of the Imperial palace under the Golden Throne should Chaos decide to try it again!” look ;). Really looks awesome if you want to build an extremely Venerable Dreadnought :). That might still remember the Primarchs and the Emperor himself ;).
Those, like Bjorn Fellhanded, still sit in usual dreadnoughts. And surely the Space Wolves would put Bjorn into one, had they some of these types left. As one of the largest chapters, who if not them?
Anyways, I dislike the clean look of this model. Might work for 30k or in fact 25k, but it has to fit on a 40k table, or be gone.
Its experimental rules are good aswell, and for the time being it can also be used in Codex:Chaos Space Marines aswell as all the other marine books.
It puts Tactical Dreadnought Armour into Perspective . . .
It looks great – but I see it as something I would have associated with well…Warpath lol. Also – I it suffers from the old thing of ”this looks more technologically advanced than the ones that are from its future” thing lol.
Tis a really nice model though, very cool.
You gotta remember that this is how a lot of the technology is in 40K. The Imperium lost countless designs and had to remake them usually not as well. Take the Land Raider, that was old technology that they found the specs for again. So when old stuff looks cooler than the new stuff it makes sense.

The reason it looks more advanced is because it is.
These are from an age when the Imperium still knew the science behind how and why things worked.
In the current 40K universe they have no idea how 99% of the old stuff was even constructed let alone how it worked and have to make do with the 1% that they do know.
little problem is that the las-cannons are actually modern ones from the 40. millennium. but a HELL YEAH from me for the rest of the model !

that is the point ! its from the times of the Horus Heresy and the terminator armour is also called “tactical cybot armour” BECAUSE it once was a smaller version of a cybot.
I really dig this design. If I was filthy rich I would be 2 or 3 of these guys right now.
It looks like the ones that were in the Stompers box from the old edition of Epic.

Once again forgeworld bring somthing out that looks amazing and as I never really liked the old chaos dreadnought I cant wait for these to feel the touch of chaos!
Hmmm, dont know what I think. Yea looks great, but I prefer the normal one.
Looks small or sumthing. Not because it is small maybe, but because of the rounded body.
Not a fan of the torso either. Looks too bulbous IMO. The legs are very nice though, they look like they’d be striding across the battlefield rather than doing plodding baby steps like the current ones seem to (most noticeable in the PC games). The arms also look better; far more articulated. I think I’ll end up taking bits from both kits and creating my own version. Keep the torso from the current kit and take the arms and legs from this kit. That way you’ll lose the clumsy look of the old dread with the added bonus of not… Read more »

Oh, and if you go on the Forgeworld site. You’ll see its actually bigger than a regular Dred.
Almost tempted to do a small pre-Heresy blood angels list just so I can get some of these, they look damn nice

Like the look of the walker, but am confused by the size of the “sarcophagus” and the position of the head.
Is there a knacked old vet dude in the tin, or just his head and torso?

In the original 40K they were called Dreadnought suits and had living pilots not corpses inside, which means they need room to move.
actually its because of the large shield-generators inside as they had a force field to protect them as the nowadays titans + the large engine they needed to power it up

… Well, except for maybe the fact that the pilot couldn’t move as he was encased in goo that kept him immobile and alive while he piloted with his mind via electrodes in his helmet that gave his senses to the suit.

How can you build the 2 arm option is the arms able to be turned around?
Looking at the pics that would seem that he thumb is placed in the centre and the fingers are of equal length.
So the hand can fit on either side
The pics don’t show it well, but it looks as if the arm is built of several pieces, the shoulder socket, an upper and lower arm, the “wrist” ring to fit the fingers into, the fingers themselves and then the ammo and muzzles or fuel tank and nozzles for the storm bolter/flamer option.
Other than the ugly gun, this looks like a warmachine mercenary warjack.

Actually there are Dreadnoughts in the old version of “Epic” called “Space Marine” – 2nd edition version of that had these in circa 1991 – Where PP even around then?
“but is it 40K Space Marine?” Lloyd, I’m sorry but that is a pretty dumb question.
It is a 30K design from the great crusades, it matches up damn well with all pre-heresy/heresy artwork and is a damn sight closer to the original dreadnought model than the current iterations are – which is basically the whole point.
They’ve also managed to do it in such a way that it does not look more like it belongs in Warmachine, with some pre-heresy artwork does look a bit too much like.

I was just about to say that yeah, its not 40k :). The designs back then were heaps rounder. Studs on shoulders pads. I tihnk this design looks much more like a furth upgrade to the terminater stype armour. As far as progresion goes. Then it turned more into the life support system and enclosed armour we no now. At least thats how it looks 🙂

Always thought the Pre-Heresy period is where the game should be, such cooler visuals. That model is ace. Really love it.

Does anyone else get Battletech feel from those.
It’s a lovely nod to the 1st/2nd edition ones, and hopefully an updated castellan and furibundus will follow – the biggest bonus is that it’s an option that’s not blinged to hell. Bring it on. Might just keep playing 40k after all – 3rd or 4th Edition of course – I’m not downgrading!
