Check it out. Darrell is at his usual tricks and pretty much bashing the 40k Rulebook with a crowbar! Have a look at how he answers this question about sweeping advance in Warhammer 40k and see what you think!
Though i understand the point of sweeping advance representing the victorious unit getting carried away or otherwise pushing on to cut the fleeing enemy down…. It’d make sense AND be alot more tactical for them to get a choice. I’d house rule a leadership test at the unit leaders ‘Ldr’ in order to get to choose not to. You could justify this as being the sarge or whoever shouting “hold your positions” or something similar. Though, personally, we house ruled sweeping advances in my local group a long time ago to simply mean extra free attacks on the fleeing unit, not an automatic massacre. Much more interesting!
I like that house rule, bro, I better look into that for my group…
I charged a mob of 30 orks into a Defiler, with me hidden PK as always, idn’t lose anyone. Then the bezerkers showed up… 29 down. And one wound on the PK nob.
Amazingly, got snake eyes, and destroyed the Defiler (which exploded and took him out, as well as a couple bezerkers)
I still lost, but I had bragging rights
I thing sweeping advance should be optional. For example; why would a Tau fire warrior ever chase after an opponent? It would be better for them to simply shoot the fleeing enemy.
in the german rulebook it says that the winner may sweeping advance.. he dont have to…
i really start to belive that there are some major translation mistakes :O
I would have to check the book, but doesn’t is actually say MAY (not in capitals) perform a sweeping advance? With certain special rules specifying that they MUST perform a sweeping advance where possible…
I could be wrong and my book is buried, so I can’t yet check.
What the rules actually say is “When a unit falls back from combat, the victors make a Sweeping Advance”. Nothing about choosing not to, dammit.
“Yeah, because it gives you cheesy options to do” : This is a really great sentence.
well done on the 40seconds of blank footage at the end of the vid guys =P
Is this the same as bringing on reserve units? had a debate at local club about being “forced” to roll for every unit in reserve as soon as possible.
Pg. 40 says:
“When a unit falls back from combat, the victors make a Sweeping Adavnce, attempting to cut down the retreating enemies.”
No choice there….
Well then there is a translation mistake from english to german… in the german rulebook it says:” Wenn sich eine EInheit aus einem Nahkampf zurückzieht, DARF der Sieger vorstürmen und versuchen, den fliehenden Gegner den Todesstoß zu versetzen”… “darf” means “is allowed to make” so a english translation would be “When a unit falls back from combat, the victors are allowed to make a Sweeping Adavnce, attempting to cut down the retreating enemies.” …. in this case i really like the german rulebook :>
Going to have to disagree with you. Necrons DO get a WBB after a sweeping advance.
Instead of posting a wall of text explaining why, I’ll leave this link, http://www.yesthetruthhurts.com/2009/02/necron-wbb-and-sweeping-advance.html
Thought from an inexperienced player Seems to me that the more disciplined/experienced the troops, the less likely they are to go careering off trying to pin their bayonets on asses. Could there not be a leadership test that if passed means that you may hold ground if you wish? I know that means another dice roll but would sorta simulate whether troops have a rush of blood to the head or not.
Imagine an assault in the doorway of a ruin. 5 Vanguard vets vs 20+ kroot with dogs. Not all the kroot could fight. They ran after the first clash and the vets cut them all down. The Tau player very nearly quit 40k.
I think the way out of a sweeping advance is the “hit and run” rule
I think you should be able to either chase them down like normal OR for shooting units like Tau unload one free round of shooting into them Honestly a Fire Warrior wouldn’t chase them down, he would shoot them while they run
Genestealers have initiative 6 Darrel, I thought you were meant to be always right?
Thumbs up if you watched all the way to end of the video hoping for an Easter Egg lol
Good video Darrel, It had never occurred to me that I might not want to sweeping advance, just as well I guess.
Great video. Yes you said it! Haha, cheers from Norway.
I lose so many Tyranid warriors agenst space marines. I win the first round and get raiped in the next so this would be cool. I would rather put a barbed strangler round in the unit than fight them in closecombat.
What if a sweeping advance would cause a unit to move off the table?
I thought you fought another fight THEN took the saves from No Retreat if you lost that one as well?
