Darrell dissects another of the old standby’s for your Space Marine army… the Predator.
But what do you guys think?
Are there better units you would take for your heavy support choice?
I find a pair of Predator Annihilators with a full loadout (That is, a twin-linked lascannon, and lascannon sponsons) can rock your opponent’s armor pretty hard, but they draw a lot of fire, and aren’t terribly tough on the sides or rear, so outflanking enemy units make it hard for me to deploy them effectively.
I usually skip the side sponsons and use them to fill out any empty HS slots. Without upgrades, they’re usually perceived as less of a threat, and at their base point cost, you’re not losing out on much if someone manages to pop them. In this configuration though, Razorbacks are equally effective, though significantly more fragile.
Got to love the predator, havent used it myself, but it is one of the things im planning to get for my space wolves.

havoc launcher is small blast, s5, ap5. If given the option, I always take havocs. 2 out of 3 basic missions you get to deploy them on the table at the start. If there is a bunker, you get a 3+ cover save (2+ if you go to ground). Plus 4 las cannon shots. Is more expensive, but you also have the option of wound allocation, one lucky shot and the whole predator is gone, at least with havocs, you can lose 1 or 2 at a time, but still have las cannons to shoot with.
I would actually forgo all chaos vehicles except the rhinos and defilers (i normally deploy 2). Lots of troops, all in rhinos with havoc launchers. Combined with a daemon with lash is devastating. Being able to group a unit as close as possible, then pile on a bunch of templates, hitting at best 19 at once (only has to touch the base remember). For example, 3 troops with rhinos with havoc launchers can hit a max of 57! Plus a unit of havocs with missile launchers can hit another 76 times! Not forgetting the defiler as well, you are looking at a lot of hits. Keeping in mind, this is talking about units this high in number. Then we talk about oblitorators… lash a unit together then plasma cannon the hell out of them. S7 AP2 small blast, really does over those terminator units. Just imagine 3 units of 3 oblitorators and 2 daemon princes of slaanesh with lash. Wound saturation at S7 AP2 is not going to be beat by much… of course, not many people will want to play against such a list haha
my pred got kill in the first round with one of the grye knight assassins but yes baal pred is just omg but against my orks (i play against my self alot) i put my baal in the middle and i get about 6 on the flamestorm and about 10 with both heavy flamers
About the Baal…. I’m using The assault canon with flamer sponsors,… I like the heavy 4 with rending alot better…. Any thoughts on that?
Sorry, Darrell. I wouldn’t put the hunter-killer missle on any predator. It’s just too high value a target. Instead I’d put it on a Rhino, so that you could use it 1st turn and then it’s just a transport again. The Rhino would be dual purpose, and your Predator would still draw fire. It would give them another reason to shoot the Rhino, but if they really wanted to do that they could take it out anyways and give your Pred a turn to fire too (Oh, by the way cheapskate tip – I built a simple launching rack out of sprues, and magentized both the rack and the missle).
One of my favorite models for SM. Versatile and relatively inexpensive if you don’t slap on all the extras. I would like to add to Darrell’s statement at the beginning there that the ol’ pred is a modern tank… I would say they’re more like a modern LIGHT tank… like the CV90 ( http://www.military-today.com/tanks/cv90120t.htm ) I mention the difference because i’d love to see a tank somewhere between the Pred and Land Raider for SM. Perhaps some ordnance? The Space Wolves back in the day used to be able to take a Leman Russ. Something a little more original would be better but a Heavy Tank of some sort.
My 10 out of 10 Blood Angels is a blood talon furioso. 20 out of ten as a duo. Sabretooth and Wolverine. Oh and then put them into forgeworld lucius pattern assault drop pods. You’ll never get a second game from your opponent after using them.
There are cheaper, and/or more practical, choices for AT than slapping LCs on a predator.
Predators are for killing infantry, lovingly known as dakka preds.
Haven’t used the Baal, so I can’t comment on that.
I always liked the Predator. For my Vanillas I field a TL Las with Boltersponsoons. It never failed to make its points an then some. I also mostly go with the Hunterkiller, it is great at hurting the big an nasty Deamonprince or things like big Nids. and together with the TL las it removes hit pints very fast. For my BA I have a classic Baal. TL Assault is it for me, I like the range over the Firestorm. My Wolves have one to, but it is used less. I take it in games when mobility is needed for the fire-support (we sometimes play without rounds limit and on a bigger table)
I would really like to see and hear what Darrell has to say about the Eldar Tanks (Waveserpent, Falcon, Fireprism and Nightspinner).
i wouldnt have thought something out of the vanila ‘dex would score 10/10 with Darrell, i would have thought something more wolfy would only cut it…..maybe they get 11/10? this makes me happy though as i play vulkan, so thanks Darrell
