Darrell pulls out a Space Marine Predator to have a look and gives us his ideas on how you should use them in your Warhammer 40K games.
Im a guard man, but if you ask me i would put heavy bolters and the autocannon on mine if i bought a chaos one, I think the autocannon and the bolters looks alot cooler. But thats just me.
4000p guard army 600p chaos army
i’d go with the twin linked lascannon, heavy bolter sponsons & a storm bolter it gives you the opportunity to destroy a tank or shoot infantry, the storm bolter gives you an extra 2 shots at closer range or an extra weapon to take a weapon destroyed result so you can continue to shoot with your main weapons it also costs 140 points so its not too bad
The weapon that gets destroyed is chosen by the attacker (pg. 61 for reference). No one in their right mind is going to leave you your main gun on a tank. If you have all lascannons than you will still have the ability to destroy tanks.
Problem is with that loadout either the lascannons are wasted on grunts, or the heavy bolters are wasted on vehicles. I think either all dakka for cheap firepower or autocannon/las sponsons are the best options. As a Space Wolf player though I would never take one of these, long fangs offer much better firepower for a relatively small amount more than a pred.
I agree. I’ve magnetized my Predators mostly because I’m fairly new to 40k and I didn’t want to glue one together only to find out later that the options I chose weren’t the best for the role I want the tank to fulfill, which honestly, changes from game to game anyway.
The Destructor load-out is very good against horde armies and my personal favorite so far. The Autocannon is a great weapon to snipe transports and while it’s good against Rhinos, it’s nothing short of amazing against Ork Trukks. Also with BS4 I prefer to have more shots rather than the twin-linked re-roll To Hit of the Lascannon turret. Heavy Bolter sponsons clean up Ork footsloggers very well and can even put the hurt on Ork Trukks if the Autocannon turret fails do destroy them. Throw in a storm bolter upgrade (Dark Angels get them for 5pts so why not) and you have a pretty nice little Ork killing machine for 100pts (may vary between Chapters).
na when i had my first army i ran with 3 of these all kited out with full las, it worked realy well for taking down any of the big stuff that was on the field.
the only thing i got wrong back then was that i beleved thet pedro cantor gave you plus one to your shooting not just your close combat attacks.
It’s a shame the predator has become a weapons platform in most people’s eyes and not the “predator” it should be stalking the battle field. All I can say is more terrain on the table guys
What has happened to john?????I thought unboxing was his baby??
those smoke launchers seem to be in an odd place, Darrell. Did you not plan on turning the main gun at all?
what about two guns on a single pannel?
Ice-cube and Xzibit ‘Jacked a tank in xXx 2, then the same tank was used in Transformers, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t a predator…
On the other hand, in the third edition rules for the Last Chancers that were in white dwarf, Grease monkey could steal tanks, so its possible.
It doesn’t fit neonshuffler but you can try to magnetize the sponsons. The predator is a sweet little tank but never will kill as much as an land raider. And still a proper little anti-vehicle tank. I think that I will use mine once again soon (got carried away with termies and landraiders)
every one has and its a shame, because there a realy handy unit.
Autocannon and las sponsoons for me.
Good for tough infantry, you get 2 las shots that may hit as opposed to 1 that will probably hit. Thats 4 shots on a tank, and if the autocannon cant hurt it then at least theres 2 chances you will with the las.
Also, the autocannon makes it look even more like a normal tank! Love the barrel on it. OoooGH!!! lol
I went with all las when I got one years ago, I feel if its got to take down heavy armour or monsters I want as high chance as possible of doing so, but this is just the role it has in my army. I don’t think its pointless to have autocannon and heavy bolters if thats the role you want, you could move and shoot the bolters though and its not too expensive I’d probably go with something else for light infantry trimming. Good unboxing.
With the amount of melta I had in my Vanilla force I used to run 2 basic preds generally with no upgrades, perhaps extra armor or H/K missile if extra points kicking around. It was a mechanized list so everything had to be mounted or a vehicle. The predator is an excellent screening vehicle. Like Darrell mentioned front armor 13 which combined with smoke can offer up a nice little mobile shield. I used it to protect my razorbacks with TL Assault cannons and TL Lascannons (which are 10 pts cheaper than on the pred btw). The autocannon is not a great gun but it can take down a medium tank/transport and more importantly can shoot down annoying fast tank hunters like land speeders. I think they should change the name of it to the Aegis or something more fitting to it’s best role, which is to shield the gaming winning units and take away the mobility of the enemy. As for the styling of it… I think they should have added another piece to the kit to represent the front armor better. They did a really good job with Vindicator. If anything I think the Vindy kit would be a good base for a nice chunky Pred… and give us SM players a chance to actually field the model… if a bit modified.
Maybe better off in the SM forums but… so after me last post I had to put my money where my mouth was and sacrificed my Vindy to turn it into a Pred. Obviously sponsons would be a problem but so far I’m happy with the outcome… not bad for a couple oh hours of work I think.
YEah… apparently I can’t paste photobucket images into here sorry for the multiple posts %20Build/F1000237.jpg direct link if you are interested
Actually, the base predator without upgrades is a decent deal at smaller point battles like 600 points. For imperial guard, a heavy sentinel with 12 front armor and 10 back and side, with an autocannon, costs 60 points (same as the base predator), but with the predator, for the same cost, you get 13 front armor, and 11 side. Now at higher points the lascannons would always be the way to go IMO, but in lower point battles, were autocannons are more useful (IMO, since you are less likely to see heavy armored vehicles) its not bad for the point costs.
Again guys, please review these before re-posting them. I didn’t agree with Darrell’s build advice in 5th, and it’s definitely bad for 6th. The Dakka version (i.e. autocannon & side sponson HB’s) is definitely the way to kit out this vehicle in 6th edition.
I’ve seen a few autocannon, heavybolter and stormbolters predators used to just lay down a ton of fire
