The xv-9 suit variant with x2 twin linked burst cannons is fun, but the xv9’s have a couple of their own problems. No targeting array, means bs3 not bs4 as my other suits use.

woops, looks like i’ve been putting on twin linked plasmas without using a multi tracker. While we are on battle suits, just say there are 3 battle suits and they have 2 gun drones each. They take a load of hits from either shooting or combat. Is there a simple way of allocating all the hits and wounds seeing that there are different saves and toughnesses. Also is it worth the points to upgrade all the drones to shields? Just wondering if anyone wants to reply?
The unit of 6 drones and 3 suits means that the majority rules for the mixed armour rule. so as long as the drones outnumber the suits in that unit, your going to have to use the drones WS/T/S whenever bieng shot at or in close combat. a way to get around this is to just bring in three gun drones. ( im not sure if you can do that i dont play tau) that way the mixed unit is even and you can choose the better stat line for that unit.

You don’t need a multitracker to fire a twin linked weapon. The main rules state that a twin linked weapon counts as a single weapon (all the codex says is that twin linked weapons take up two slots on the suit). The point being that using a twin-linked weapon with a multitracker is useless as all three slots are used; two for the twin-linked weapon and one on the multitracker. Therefore with this setup there is not room for a secondary weapon for the suit to fire using the multitracker.
Wrt which drones to bring, try bringing one shield and one gun (the shield will get the suits T value so the majority will still be suit toughness). Wounds can be allocated smartly to minimise losses and you get a attack for 5 point less. When it comes to close combat, taking attacks will be against the majority WS/T, standard suit WS is 2 anyway so no loss there and toughness is suit toughness. It does not affect when it comes your turn to attack; each model will use their own WS/S stats.
i don’t think the gun drones are overly useful attached to your squad. having to take a leadership test when they die is annoying.
i say, take your gun drones separately as an independent unit to provite LOS cover.
What if It were say a team leader of a Crisis team and he had a twin linked Plasma Rifle which takes up 2 hard points and a missile pod that takes up the 3rd. and he has an Integrated Multitracker. Can he Shoot both the Twinlinked Plasma and Missile pod?

no, because the ‘twin linked system’ counts as 2 weapon systems. i’m with you, i think it would be awesome, but having those plasma guns plus something else seems cold… lol.

The XV88 battlesuit with twin linked plasma guns would then have 3 support systems. (1 for each plasma gun and one for the twin linked rail guns or would that be two for the 2 rail guns making it 4???). Would you then need multible multitrackers for this system?
well as I see it, The Broadside is already able to hold those weapons. Broadsides were made for that purpose. The Twinlinked System counts as one weapon system but takes up 2 hard points, (Correct me if I’m wrong) and so being u have two weapon system the multi tracker will allow u to fire both the Rail gun and the Plasma Rifle. Thats how I see it anyhow. Its a shame this wasn’t properly clarified in the Tau FAQ.
Yeah the multi tracker is there so you can fire both in one turn having paid for them.
You don’t need to worry about hard points on a broadside. They have one slot to use on a support system is all (neglecting hard-wired systems) and on revision it seems you must fill that slot.
If you wanted to fire both twinlinked systems at the same time, yes. A multitracker is not required to fire a twinlinked weapon on its own.

I do believe you can take a weapon and a twin linked weapon… but you can’t fire both unless you upgrade your suit(s) to shas’vre so they can take battlesuit wargear and take the hardwired multi-tracker. So yeah exile, I do believe you’re correct. As for mixed units.. p19 will tell you multiple toughness units will use the majority toughnes value… so if you have 4 gun drones and 3 battlesuits all the hits will be wounding against toughness 3. if only 3 drones they are equal so you can take the higher toughness. Hello BoW I saw the video on You-tube and i knew i had to register to comment so i did right away. Darrell you got it right;i’ve been throguh the codex for tau dozens of times on this issue. With normal Shas’ui battle suites a twin linked weapon takes up 2 of the 3 slots available and using the multi-tracker (support system) is useless. the same weapon in any 2 of the 3 slots counts a twin linked right away. Sorry tau guys but i think your a the back of the queue to get a new codex as Dark Eldar,Grey Knights, Necrons and Witch Hunters will all done before them also Black Templars and Dark Angels maybe done before them.
Ok – so I’ve been getting it slightly wrong, but now the question for me is do I have twin linked plasma rifle and missile pod or twin linked missile pods and plasma rifle on my Shas’vre?
Personally I prefer twin linked Plasma Rifles and s missile pod as they are more likely to kill something than with missile pods because of their AP 2. You can still fire the plasma at a good range of 24″ and re roll a miss.
Twin-linked Missile pods with a flamer is a very effective load out whilst being cheap. Use the missile pods for ranged attacks then when things start getting too close you’ve got the flamer’s multiple hits to thin down any assaulting troops.
the plasma rifles with the rerolls are devastating.
Are there other armies that should get a new codex before the Tau?
Hell yes!
The Tau are the newest army and they are on their 2nd codex already. While there are still armies out there, that are still on their 1st codex.
I say the armies that are still running 3rd edition codexes should get their codexes upgraded before anyone else gets a new codex.

Of course they need a new codex only necron is probably ahead of them with need but since the sequence seems to be xenos-imperial-xenos-imperial I agree with the other poster….Prob be a while……to bad still a great line of models….cept the broadside arguably the worst metal/plastic kit gw makes.
I play against tau and I think we have played it wrong. It seems like battle suits always have tons of weapons. I get destroyed by twinlinked everything before i can get into combat. (which is important for me cause I play eldar.)

You don’t need to use a multi tracker to shoot a twin linked weapon. A twin linked weapon takes up 2 slots, but is still only 1 weapon. If you are taking a TL weapon, targeting array is far superior.

i believe necrons need some more heavier options… and tau need some thing good for assault… and sadly the tau are pretty good in combat against IG…
Necrons need a new codex way more than tau. They dont have any options apart from distrupter fields, particle projetors on tomb spiders and a load of necron lord options that are almost impossible to show on the model.
Daemon hunter Inquistors and grey Knight Grand Masters are in the exact same position, half of our upgrades/powers and rules no longer work at all in 5th and the ones that do can;t be shown on the model (especially since we don’t actually have a separate GM model). Out of all the 4th edition armies waiting for a new codex Tau are one of the ones who need it least, only possibly DA and Chaos need it less.
There are some rumors that there will be a new Tau book released Aug 2011 (It’s currently in playtesting) New stuff: 7 Alien allies (don’t know if this is new or in total), new figures for 2 of them All metal sets to plastic (Pathfinder box, Kroot with hounds and Shaper , Vespids) Box of Krootox and possible larger Possible new tank Changes to Hammerhead Railgun rules. Couple of things i don’t get in there, like why a couple of markerlights would cause difficult terrain, they’re designed for marking targets(who’d have thought it) so you aim centre mass to help your guys home in on the most likely place for a hit.
Also those railguns sound broken as hell. 5th edition made mech the only viable army choice and these things have the potential to de mech an entire army in one turn.
It’s only rumors so there is much that can be untrue, take it with a grain of salt 😉

I think that complaining about being unable to display upgrades (or not having enough upgrades) on models is completely irrelevant to necessity of revised editions. The -only- important question is combat viability. In fifth edition, not only has loads of Tau equipment (decoy launchers, all things TP test orientated etc) been made redundant, but also as virtually the only completely melee unviable army in existence, fifth edition has made Tau tournament armies more or less useless. If you don’t give them the ability to demech early they stand no chance of winning a game at all.
