I don’t want the ones who don’t paint their minis to feel disparaged, but a big part of the hobby is modeling and painting… You’re obviously not going to use it on troops, but a scattering of those lovely heads and feet on a base for a character or a big creature would look amazing, while providing very little tactical disadvantage.

Some games use “true line of sight”, which means you need to draw a line diectly to the model… usually the body of the model.
If you have a high base, you gain less cover from terrain, as the body of the miniature rises above it.
