Hi Romain,
Was wondering which brush you used for stippling as you never advertised it. I have never seen them that small before. Not that size matters, it’s more important where you a jabbing it about π
I currently have a stipple brush that is about 4mm in diameter (army painter) so I would appreciate the advise as mine is a bit unwieldy……. The brush that is.
It’s not the size, it’s the point… But I see yours.
Your point, I mean, not your size.
This is a synthetic brush from Royal and Langnickel… From their “mini” arts and crafts range, it’s the 20/0 spotter. It’s not really 20/0 though, only about 3/0 or 4/0 on most “artist brush” scale, but it is wider, as I’ve shown.
It’s all about girth, isn’t it ?
I think it all depends on which way its pointing tbh buddy. π
I am also unsure how paint brushes are sized. I have Winsor and Newton series 7 mini’s and they are labelled 000, 00, 0, 1. But I also have some Vallejo ones labelled 3/0. is 3/0 equal to 000? as they don’t look anything like smaller Winsor and Newton ones as they are a lot shorter.
000 is supposed to be equal to 3/0… Yet it’s not.
There is unfortunately no unifying size chart, even though all brushes from one country tend to follow the same scale (not always true, but a good generalization).
It doesn’t help much, since Raphael is french, W&N british and Vallejo spanish.
Prince August is french and still uses the Vallejo system, since they’re Vallejo’s “front” in France… Royal and Langnickel have their own weirdo system due to an incredibly wide range of shapes…
It’s a hassle, but every brand always has the equivalent of the 2, 1, 0, and 000 brushes… They’re almost always labeled as such, and they’re always close to the same size (at least their points are).
I’ve done an article on how to select brushes and care for them, it’s on BoW somewhere in the “three colours up” section… There’s more information on that subject.
I hope this helps, but somehow I doubt it ! It’s all about what works for you…
BoW Romain
Thanks for the reply π
I have seen your video and I didn’t think I would learn anything from it tbh. I was very wrong indeed!! I used to always store my brushes with the bristles up and used the bristles to retrieve paint from the pot!! tut tut I know. hehe.
I will be remedying these mistakes this weekend when I start my first HARDCORE painting session in well over 2 years. π I have also purchased some of the “The Masters” brush cleaner and preserver, as my cousin informed me of the product and the benefits of its use.
Thanks for informing me about the different sizes etc, as it was beginning to do my nut, I bought my brushes mainly from a single supplier and chose brushes from across their range because of the great reviews they have, W&N series 7 miniature, don’t make the mistake I made and get the water colour ones with the same name, as I was charged for the error and rightfully so. DOH!!
Looking forward to these videos buddy, as I log onto BoW with puppy dogs eyes, hoping I’ll find new found secrets of painting and modelling. Will be trying you undercoat method too this weekend, if the weather holds up. Then I have about a full years work cut out getting my minis painted, as like any gamer will tell you. “you are not a true gamer until you have your own body weight in unpainted models!!” Sadly I must be a true gamer :'(
Yes… I have my own pile of white metal… and resin… and lead, since I’ve been doing this a while…
Thanks for being so keen on what I do !
As the saying goes…
A clever man can converse with clever men,
A wise man can speak to the world.
And you my boy are a wise man indeed, It’s just a petty your French!!! (No offence intended) π hehe
Flattery will get you nowhere… But it’s a start ! π
Always liked the idea of having a Lizardperson army (can’t discriminate now can we!!). It allows you to paint different tones you would not normally use. Was one of the reasons I got an Eldar army tbh. But sadly half of it is in my body weight category. QQ
I was thinking if you use an airbrush on any of your figures?
If so…
1, Do you find it a useful tool
2, Does it improve elements of your painting
3, Does it increase you miniature output
4, Do you have any tips for purchasing a set
5, Any fun facts or techniques for using an airbrush
I apologise in advance if I am increasing your workload or you get pressured into learning to use one for the sake of customer satisfaction.
I only ask as it was something I was looking into getting (an airbrush and compresser). I have seen a few videos on-line about the subject, but I feel that certain videos are from employees/promoters/fan boys of certain companies and I would appreciate an unbiased professional viewpoint on the matter. I was thinking you may use one because the way in which you undercoat your models, love the idea I may add!! Will be heading off to Maelstrom Games (my local gaming club!! am I luck or what? :D) to pick up some grey spray paint (Or I might try the 6 cans of ogre flesh I still have in geek storage!! lol
This is completely unrelated, but thanks for asking… I’m always glad to answer !
1) Yes, it has its uses… Some airbrushes can even do very thin lines nowadays, so it would almost be possible to paint a miniature completely without a brush, but it’s overkill IMHO…
2) Improve, no… Ease, yes. It does improve the regularity of the gradients on large surfaces, and you’re not afraid of black undercoats anymore. And the process is quick… Even though cleaning the airbrush is a hassle afterwards. Don’t get the whole thing out for a single coat that’s done in five seconds or you’ll feel frustrated, that’s all I’m saying…
3) Of course, it’s perfect for armies and big models, so the answer is yes… But I feel this question doesn’t apply to me, as I seldom paint armies. I paint for pleasure, individual miniatures and very reduced forces (although I’ve done chain painting in the past).
4) and 5) Tips will be given in time… You’re not the only one who request that sort of thing, but we’re focusing on brushes as of now, as they’re the basic tool. Airbrushing (and especially choosing an airbrush and keeping it clean and in working order) is a whole new set of skills !
I hope it answers some of your questions…
I look forward to the day you do a review on what an airbrush is and what would be a good one for modelers like us. We need all the help we can get. Save us from over paying for an airbrush that doesn’t do what we need.
Thank you for your response π Back on topic now, as I find it hard to keep on track. Doh!
I have just bought the Lizard man figure and a few battle forces after seeing this (So hopefully some new colours to work with!!. I plan to work in parallel to your own efforts. So this will be the first time that I hope your videos will come out a bit slower. π But my motivation has increased a lot, as I think it will be a fun project and quite encouraging.
Thanks again π
Mick
Right… No pressure for me, then ! lol
Mind you, I haven’t painted the whole lizardman in this series of videos, but it’s only missing a few details.
I hope this goes well !
