Hi guys...
This is a question for all of you. Do you like card games?
Well... do ya?
Following on from the article I posted about Tor Gaming yesterday. I found on their store pages, a couple of videos on a card game called War for Edadh by Warrior Elite Ltd (so I posted it above).
I've never heard of it before. The only contact I've really had with the card games of the gaming world are the big CCG names and a couple of fun little "beer & pretzel" games... you know... Magic the Gathering... Yu Gi Oh... (the mighty and much loved) Munchkin and Fluxx.
Anyway, are there many of you out there who would be interested in some Magic the Gathering videos?
I've looked at YouTube and frankly the offerings there are best left unmentioned. However, I know a guy down the pub (isn't this how all Irish stories start!), who was Irish MTG champion a couple of times (maybe it was just once... seems like more...) and who might make a good presenter.
How would you guys fancy some videos, where we discuss the latest net decks, rules FAQs and the (frankly frightening) tournament scene for the Magic CCG?
I feel that Magic "scene" is all a bit serious. A number of my mates play it at a high level, many have been to the world championships and they are passionate about the game... well perhaps that's the wrong word... when Magic is mentioned, it's like a dark cloud descends and discussions become very "business-like".
I don't know... is it just me?
So what do you guys think, would you like to see some of that, if we can present it in a fun and interesting way?

I like card games but in a LCG format that Fantasy Flight does i like to know what i am geting so CCG format is realy not for me. I curently play Call of Cthulhu and looking to get Game of thrones LCG. i also have 7 seas and MTG deck but they dont see much actsion.
the good thing about card games is that they are quik to set up and quik to but away. so you can pass the time.
I remember when the CoC game used to be a CCG too. But Magic drowned it out, so it was ressurected as a non-CCG card game. Not that that’s a bad thing, but I feel the market can only withstand a couple of really intensive CCGs… the cost is astronimcal once you really get into it. My mates would think nothing of dropping a few hundred quid on it each time there’s a new release. I’m a fan of Magic. I’ve played it off and on since I was about 12 years old. I like that the RAW (Rules as Written) are very specific and they seem to play-test cards a lot to make sure they’re not totally broken. I like that the rules are much more concrete, so to speak. Whereas 40k is more…wet sand…in comparison. I do get what you mean when you say the Magic scene can get a bit serious Andy. My friends and I try to keep it as casual as possible. How can any game that has to ban entire series of cards from the official tournaments be considered rock solid?
Northern Ireland is a small place, basically, if you play Magic in any tournament, you’re getting points in the ranking.
The national championship is held in Dublin, but the winner is normally from NI (I think a Cork guy won this year… first time in about a decade!).
As a boke who used to hang around the couple of game shops in Belfast… the Stack and Serenity… I’ve met the “Magic Guys” and can probably get a few of them to sit down for a few on-camera discussions.
Might have to wash a few of them first, but hey-ho!

I just don’t have the attention span for card games. Maybe I just need the shiny toys to distract me or maybe card games are inextricably linked in my subconscious to booze, gambling and showgirls so I get bored when the shops with card games don’t have those as well…
I feel your pain… Card games don’t really do it for me either… but some guys love them to a degree that defies logic!
I think that BoW is missing a trick, by not geting someone on to give Magic a bit of love… the numbers don’t lie… MTG dwarfs most games, we shouldn’t ignore the 300lb gorilla in the room.

MTG had me when it was first released, then I sold a Black Lotus for £50 and I realised things were getting crazy and I dropped out.
Played a call of Cthulhu card game for a while which was fun, but not played any in a long time and don’t really miss them.
Though portability is an advantage.
I play a tiny bit of Magic with my wife. That is as close to gaming that I have gotten her. Although the two CCGs that I really invested in were Jyhad and Star Trek. The latter for the simple reason that I am a Star Trek tragic (damn STO has been consuming a lot of my painting time). The prior, as a multi-player game I have not seen a CCG that came even close to how awesome Jyhad can be. I used to think nothing of spending £12 on each on a playset (£48 for 4 cards) years ago, but as I got back into 40k I couldn’t find the money anymore for cards. I just keep a shoebox of old decks for playing with, but I don’t buy any more.
I hate to be against it but…I’d rather it didnt. I’ve heard its got too many serious players, but I’m not going to dismiss it on those grounds: its not as if warhammer doesn’t.
However I don’t really like card games (although I was into pokemon back in the day) and I still feel the warhammer coverage could be deeper and get more interesting (but it is good at the moment). I would rather master of one trade than master of none…
I understand what you mean. However, we would be getting someone in who really knows what they’re talking about, rather than trying to muddle through ourselves.

Warren and I like our RPGs, the first thing we’ll probably cover is the new version of the “red box” D&D set.
I’ve written some D&D stuff, so we’ll probably put that up for dowload too.

I’m all for CCG, LCG etc. coverage, just don’t limit it to just Magic the greedy. That games already gets tons of its own coverage, live videos, news reports etc. I play and have played over a dozen card games and there is lots of good ones out now or in the past. Right now I stick with the FFG LCG’s, Game of Thrones and the upcoming Lord of the Rings.
Ah now this takes me back, I think I still have my old deck some where, i played a fire and water one, worked quite nicely, what did everyone else play?

There are enough magic players outside of the existing BoW audience to warrant high quality videos,
and we all know its sold at the same darned gaming stores so why exclude it from the same gaming sites?
I personally moved over to the LCG as well but magic is as strong as ever.
I think it’s worth a punt at pushing some good content out – I’d like to see it pitched at a begginer level for the first couple of weeks or so (so as I can get my head around it lol) As BoW continues to find it’s feet in the various systems and we find good presentors to help take viewers on meaningful journeys through the systems, I’m really happy to see more and varied aspects of the ‘hobby’ make it onto the channel. I used to like Magic The Gathering until I discovered that when your cards are at least a year or two old, you can’t use them – they’re banned. That’s what put me off MTG.
i’m not a follower of the card games, but they did release a ‘magic the gathering’ game for download on the PS3. maybe i’ll pick it up and see what i think.
I would love to see some magic card eps as a level 1 pro 🙂
Somehow playing a children’s card game has caused me to become seriously injured….

No please no MTG coverage! I’ve been following you guys for quite a while now even though I only just registered in order to stop you from making a terrible mistake. I’ve always loved your stuff so there was no needfor me to speak up until now ^^ I’d much rather see more wargames covered than a completely new format! There’s so much out there for MtG we don’t need another site. Rather please cover more of Sot3R, FoW and other historic tabletops like Napoleonics, WW1 or WW2. I second that. MtG has more than enough coverage elsewhere.
Never got into to card games, so some beginner stuff would be interesting. CoC especially would be cool. However, not sure my pocket money will stretch to another game system… RPG videos would be awesome, covering systems an basic how to plays. But adventure reviews would be great, a sense of how many players, themes/backgrounds, how long to play etc.
We can do one better than that, we can write and publish our own adventures for free download, as-well-as reveiws of professionally published products.
It’s a whole new world of fun stuff that we can add to the site.

I’m just a single voice here, but I covering magic cards is something I would like to see. I used to play in local tournaments a few years ago, and every player in the tournament was “That F****in Guy”. Everyone was a rules lawyer, deck building fiend. They had exact copies of the decks that placed in the top ten of the world championships. It was so annoying. Which is why I think that Magic has a such a seriousness to it.
