Gale Force Nine is looking to bring the new version of Spartacus: A Game Of Blood And Treachery to the tabletop in April. You'll be able to get stuck into the backstabbing and blood-soaked combat of Ancient Rome in this updated edition of one of our favourites.

This new version of the game steps away from the licenced look of the original and adopts a different artstyle. It's still brutal and speckled with blood but it offers up a less stylised look at the period. I'm still not entirely sure what I think of the cover for the game and the art choice but the components do look nice.

During the general gameplay of Spartacus, you'll find yourself building up your array of gladiators and stabbing your "friends" in the back in order to get the upper hand. When the games themselves are hosted, you'll put forward your gladiators as you try to put on the greatest fights to entertain the crowd.

One of the cool things about Spartacus is that the gladiatorial games are just as much fun as the rest of the strategic backstabbing. As a game-within-a-game, it brings some real watercooler moments to the tabletop and it's fun even if your favourite gladiator gets slaughtered!
