Mythic Battles: Pantheon Funds & We Get A Norse Teaser Of What’s Next!
December 2, 2016 by brennon
The people have spoken and the battle for Olympus will begin next year as Mythic Battles: Pantheon was funded. However, we also got a teaser at what's next for them as they build on the Mythic Battles project. Do you fancy Norse mythology next?
Here you can see an awesome illustration of Thor (well, he has a hammer anyway) by Stefan Kopinski, who did lots of artwork for the campaign. He is holding Mjolnir aloft and, well...I'm already sold on their next campaign. Bring it on.
A lot of people were also hoping that they'd explore Egyptian mythology after this but I think this is the next good step for them as they look towards another popular pantheon of Gods.
What do you think?

I hope the model looks like the illustration.
If its as good as the others it will be better.
I wasn’t going to jump in on this kickstarter at first but I’m so glad I did now, even though its cost me a small fortune! The figures look amazing and will be for real if Conan is anything to go by. Looking forward to the Norse MB, whatever its going to be called, by the time its out I might have even painted up the first of my Conan KS minis!
I’m glad it’s far off into 2018 before we see it ( i’m calling it Mythic Battles: Valhalla ). My wallet needs time to heal after paying for all those lovely Greek Pantheon mini’s.
Gives us an excuse for the Viking Prayer:
Lo there do I see my father.
Lo there do I see my mothers and my sisters and my brothers.
Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning.
Lo they do call to me.
They bid me take my place among them.
In the halls of Valhalla, where the brave may live forever.
I suspect a lot of people will research the Norse/Scandinavian mythologies over the next 18 months or so….
Definitely. 13th Warrior is a personal favourite.
Sorry, but, please, while I do like the 13th warrior film itself as well as the underlying story, plot construction and background themes explored, and while I also find it great they dug up this actual gem of history and brought to general attention (hopefully, and hopefully consideration, too) its content of non black and white thinking, anti superstitious attitude and overcoming of outwardly seeming inherent incompatible differences and seperations between cultures (btw, that is true for the “enemy” as well), this film’s presentation of the so called norse culture is horribly twisted to serve misguided and plain stupid clichees. Some social and philosophical subtones are remarkably out of the usual box and fitting yet the visuals are all sorts of wrong. And concerning a game like Mythic Battles there’s almost only the visuals connecting it to source material (i.e. culture).
So, *please*, don’t plead for late medieval full plate armour for vikings (to name just one of the most disrespectful atrocities)!
@darnast wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could just enjoy it on its own merits, rather than cursing its flaws, or even potential flaws? We get that you want to come across as educated.
@kantor72, hope you see what I truely wrote and mean. Please, have a look at my comment down below dorthonion’s.
Cheers!
Then you have some serious research to do…
The Norse/Scandanavian mythology is a logical ‘next step’ for this series.
(series ? We’ve only got the one game … and).
Can’t wait very glad I backed 🙂
I really want the game now because of this Norse expansion.
I’ve been following the kickstarter with great interest as I think the sculpts are great. I’d pretty much made up my mind that I wasn’t going to be a backer as I would have preferred Norse gods. Well what do yer know
Something inspirational for the after Christmas shopping list

Damn damn and double damn I will get ruined one they put that out ….
Better start saving big man 😉
My savings account cried out in fear when this was shown
I personally would like to see some for us Westerners less present mythology, too.
Egyptian’s okay. But what about ancient Meso- and Southern American pantheons and peoples? Or South Seas and Oceania. Or Central to East Asian mythologies. What about Hinduism and traditional Himalayan regions’?
While that certainly would be interesting I think those would be too unknown to get support.
And there might be a little resistance from the religious front if the series were to dip into stuff that even today is considered sacred. They would have to consult with someone who has a very deep understanding of those subjects, which may be equally rare to find.
The classic mythology is a pretty safe source to explore for gaming as the only controversy is in the nakedness of the various gods/heroes/monsters/troops.
@limburger, I think all of that is very true. It’s just that less often used and exotic stuff seem more intriguing. Tiring of the 100.000th take on the same old thing.
That said, I find it great they chose ancient Greek mythology.
Btw, do you know any other “safe to use” mythology that would provide so much source material? I think I don’t. But that might just be my limited understanding. Are there even nearly as many reknowned fighting hosts in Norse mythology / Scandinavian history for units?
Yeah, classical heroic nudity would have been cool. Even though it might just be a stylised artform (but don’t know that). There’s this certain sense of heroic and enlightened epicness, but also tragedy about it.
I agree.
However I didn’t know half the Greek mythology that is in the pledge and the other half is from bad movies and Disney animated movies which tend to exclude the not so family friendly stuff …
As such I’m pretty sure there’s a ton of Norse stuff that most of us wouldn’t have heard about unless you count stuff about Thor in certain comics.
Ancient Egypt would be another good candidate, because like the Greek & Norse it is relatively popular (the mummy franchise is getting a sequel/reboot) and thus there’s bound to be enough experts that are willing to assist.
Whether either of those can get to the 100+ units we’ve had in this kickstarter is a matter for experts to decide.
The key aspect to remember is that certain areas in history are popular because there’s a lot of (good) material to be found.
One potentially tricky & rich background that could be exploited is the bible. However religious subjects can be controversial when used as entertainment. There will be people who think it is heresy to do so.
Japanese and Chinese mythology is interesting, but the big issue may simply be that there’s not enough good knowledge of these subjects outside of their respective countries. Then there’s the cultural / language barrier that makes it hard for non experts to grok the finer details of this stuff. It’s something you can see in Japanese games like Pokemon that get exported to the west.
the Himalayan tradition is closed door, you would get it completely wrong without help.
those that could help are forbidden to do so.
This would be awesome. Every time a new model was released, I went and read the backstory. Cant wait to do this for the Norse lore as well!
@darnast
Sorry for confusing matters – I am certainly NOT appealing for medieval armour or murmillo helmets. It is the spirit of the thing, the defiance in spite of all odds that I admire. The 13th Warrior is not an iconic movie but it has its moments.
I want howlng warriors armed with ulfbert swords, longships, valkyries and maybe some of their opponents too (Brian Boru anyone?)
@dorthonion, I see no need for you to be sorry for anything. I didn’t even understand this text was from the film. *facepalm*
Thus, @kantor72, I couldn’t even make this close connection between the comments of both of you. Interpreted each as a general reply on the – supposed – nordic topic for the second installment of MB. If I had seen it, I wouldn’t have gone full anti hollywood stereotypes mode. 😉 (Exaggerating here a bit obviously. That wasn’t full mode. :D)
Well, the core of what I wrote then I find right and don’t mean it in the least way offensive towards any of you (or anyone). Neither was my intention to claim knowledge of what you whished for. Nor do I presume to have any right or authority to judge over someone’s feelings like that. Only wanted to plead to not give the Monolith Games guys more ideas towards that pop direction than they already got. And also to further attention to more historically oriented approaches. I just wouldn’t have put this as a direct answer to your comment, kantor.
I do love my own pop culture fix, too. As said before I like the film for various reasons and feel it’s credited far too little for those.
I’m sorry if my stuff caused/causes any misunderstandings or bad feelings!
@darnast. No problem. I agree with @dorthonian. Should the teaser picture of Thor prove true and the Norse are next, i would like to see all that @dorthonian mentioned and more besides.
@darnast . No problem. I agree with @dorthonion . As far as the film goes, i take it for what it is, not a historical record by any means. If Monolith go with the teaser and the Norse are next, i want to see the same stuff that @dorthonion mentioned and more besides.
If this will be as good as the one now, which it probably will. Then I will be in very good place.
I can already imagine putting Ares against Thor, what a fight that will be.
Or Odin v Zeus 😀 .
Kraken versus Scylla…
There are so many famous explorers there too – Leif Ericson went to America!
I’d be happy for a pop culture style take on Norse mythology and legend. I think there is nothing wrong with allowing the artists to be creative. That said, if it was very closely allied to the Sagas and era appropriate armour/weapons, I’d be happy with that too. It reminds be a little of the Frank Miller 300. I loved that film and the look of the Persian hordes, though it was obviously historically inaccurate.
Perhaps we will see a Xercies expansion for MBP down the line.
I’d also love to see a co-op campaign or similar which takes into account the Golden Fleece stories as a campaign.
I am just so happy there are NO HORNS on Thors helmet.
No horns…YET! ;P
It will be something more I have to back 🙂
Being that MB pantheon takes place after everything have gone to Hades and back. I am curious to see if the Norse game will take place after Ragnarok 😀
Aw man….if I had known, I would’ve waited for the Norse version. Thankfully I just backed the EB level and was saving funds for the PM. I think I’ll hold my funds, keep the base game (great value and I think will be a good game with just that stuff) and just wait for the Norse one.
That one I’ll sink big bucks into. My wallet is crying already.
