Check Out Painted Miniatures & Background For Para Bellum’s Conquest
September 25, 2017 by brennon
Para Bellum Wargames have been talking about their world of Conquest for a while now and we've been showing off renders of their upcoming models. Well, now we get to show off painted miniatures AND delve a bit deeper into the background of the game too!
We start off with a look at some of the Archers that you will be getting if you aim towards the Spire as your faction of choice in the game. Here you can see them, in their Oriental designed poses, firing their arrows at the oncoming enemy with pinpoint accuracy.
You can see how a lot of the style of the artwork as well as the colours used has been translated over into these models. In particular, as we'd discussed in last week's Weekender show, it's fascinating to see the asymmetry in their design with the arms loading and firing the bow in quick succession.
Spire Brutes
As well as the Spire Archers we also had the Spire Brutes, those hulking masses of flesh that are sent, berserk, into battle with no care for their own safety.
Once again we're seeing the models in both red and purple schemes which show off the painful armour they are encased inside of and the bandaged and ravaged forms of the creatures beneath all that metal.
I think of the two colour choices they've made here I particularly like this one in the red with the green weapons. I think it provides a nice contrast and focuses in on the 'rage' of these creatures.
It's interesting in particular to see the face of one of these creatures here in this model. It certainly suddenly makes you feel for them as the tortured beings they are.
One would imagine this also gives us a look at some of the alternative weapon options they have access to. The swirling power in those blades makes them look like brutal and sickening weapons.
What Is Conquest?
As well as these wonderful miniatures to take a look at from The Spire, we got some more information on just what Conquest is and where it's come from.
Some of the points from there that we believe are of particular interest...
- Plastic models!
- Rules designed by Alessio Cavatore & Riverhorse with a different mechanic for a players round based on 'stacking' units in the order you wish to activate them.
- Four factions at launch with plenty of expansion potential
- The world features mature artwork and a mature setting for each of the factions
It certainly sounds like it's going to be worth keeping an eye on this one to see just what they have in store.
As always, we'll make sure to show off more of the game as we get it!
What do you think?
"The swirling power in those blades makes them look like brutal and sickening weapons..."
Hmm not too sure. Loved the artwork, still do. The paint jobs don’t portray what the artwork is for me. I cannot put my finger on it though. Maybe different angles, different factions, I may change my mind. Until then, I have hopped back onto the fence with this one
Let me help. I can put the finger on it (although it’s really painful). The paint jobs don’t fit the atmosphere of the (earlier) art works. The colour palette and technique clearly are totally different.
To me, though, the real problem are the models themselves (see below).
Yeah, I have to say I agree. This feels like a very big clash with the art we have seen. I don’t think it is the minis themselves, or the pose but rather the painting. I am not sure these colours and techniques are getting accross the feel of these models in the setting of their world. Very over the top colour schemes, that make me think of something like world of warcraft. Not a bad thing in its own right, but the art feels more gritty, dirty, dark which does not lend itself to these bright and poppy colours.… Read more »
I very much disagree on the models. In comparison to the (initial) illustrations they feel very dfferent. To me basically crude. The Bowmen: the one drawn is very slim, sleek, elegant in a weird menacing way. The attire seems quite clear and straight, not without ornaments and details but very fine and restricted. In contrast the models are quite bulky from the guys’ bodies to all of the equipment. Everything is too busy, too. Also they totally reshaped quiver and bow. The Brutes: The models’ armour is wobbly and roundish, rather like indistinct biomatter, while in the illustration they have… Read more »
I’m inclined to agree. The paintjobs are miles away from what I was expecting and don’t seem very well aligned with the artwork and atmosphere we’ve seen so far. Bit weird that. The minis look nice but I want MORE INFO. Do we have a release date yet?
Just noticed it’s mass battle, lost my interest there. I was really hoping this would be a skirmish game, not many fantasy skirmish games around.
I spoke with them last week and their exact words were, “although th egame is not mass war it is definitley a battle!”
as I understand it, it will be a significantly lower model count than the likes of KoW or WHFB. More along the line of AoS or warmahordes
So I got totally unhyped.
The Minis dont excite me. The paintjobs neither.
But design is interesting nonetheless. I wont write it off yet.
I’ not sure how that alone can ill your hype… they aint your paintjobs XD not my taste and I reckon I can do better. There’s some dodgy basing too (sand on foot) but the models themselves look fantastic looking throught that. The rule reveals appeal to me. Deployment and turns out, command stacking and escalation in and I’m interested to see how the fog of war is realised in the rules. Knowing that Calvatore is directly working on the rules is a huge relief for me. I’ve been a fan of his work for a long time. If anything,… Read more »
love the art, love the setting, definitely got that oldhammer realms of chaos feel to it with a bit of KD:M in there for good measure. the rules sound interesting and Alessio is a safe pair of hands. but the models are falling short of my expectations. the archers look flat and 2D and the detail is not sharp. some questionable body mechanics too, especially in that first brute. these models would work fine for other settings but the theme and art style really needs something along the lines of those zealot minotaur’s or the raging heroes fantasy stuff. there… Read more »
I can only show you a sneak peak of the reap thing 😉

thanks mate
Wow. This is looking a tousand times better. There may still be hope. Thank you!
no probs. They are looking very good. I had to remove the image. Nearly got in trouble 😀
The initial hype had me interested, especially as it had been mentioned the sculpts due to the artwork were looking to be similar to Kingdom Death. These aren’t I’m afraid so might pass.
Sulphur, keep watching I’m sure the real thing won’t disappoint you so much

Oh my! These are not the official studio paint schemes! I have confirmation that these colour schemes were just messing around with bright colours.
I have seen the true-to-artwork spire brute painted and it doesn’t disappoint.
The proper ones will be revealed next week along with a new faction 🙂
Such a shame. The artwork and concept art have such a lovely style – subdued but deep watercolours – Rackham-esque. If on,y that had come through here. I think the miniatures are (potentially) lovely – but the colour schemes and slapdash paint jobs will do more harm than good in terms of marketing at this early stage.
Please, this is not the official paint scheme. They were massing around with bright colours to see how it would look. Here’s a sneak peak at what’s coming

Those links don’t work – says image has been deleted.
It’s more the question – how much do they care about the world they are building or the quality of the product? Those images were released with the company stamp – so they are clearly sent to promote the game, the minis, and the world they are designing. By any standard of professional quality, those images of sub-par paint jobs do the game and the potential for the product a disservice.
I had to remove the image. Nearly got in trouble. Scroll up, you’ll see the reaction of others… “Wow. This is looking a tousand times better. There may still be hope. Thank you!”.
I know it’s not much but trust me. When you see the real thing, you might feel differently 🙂
It wont be long until we see them.

I’ve replied to a few of you individually but I’ll leave this here too. These are not the “official” paint jobs. More of a mess around to see what it looks like.
The real deal is coming. For now, here is a sneak peak
