Grasshoppers and Elephants by thebelon

Kicking things off this week is thebelon and his Tour of Duty in Nam. He's been working his way through Vietnam in several scales now for a while and it's clearly a passion project for him, and since the arrival of Nam '68 at the end of last year the painting project has now segwayed into including *drum rolls* BAT REPS!!!

There have been some outstanding moments in each of the games so far and green squad members are earning their nicknames in the hot humid jungles of Vietnam. Lucky B earned his name after surviving a sniper attack only a few weeks after tripping a booby trap that failed to go off!!! How much longer his luck will hold remains to be seen.

Along with the battle report that has these fantastic photographs of the game that look like they've been framed for a film the project contains some ideas for converting Nam '68 to a solo wargame and this is a great addition for people who want to get into a campaign game like this and are worried about lazy friends flaking out and ruining the experience.

So far there have been three games in the campaign and every game has the potential to push the calendar forward so with the fourth game coming the platoon have been in country now for three months and have a long way to go before they get to go home. As we learned from platoon you can't count your time left this early on you need to think of it as days gone so it seems smaller.

Trench Crusade New Antioch Warband by Scarhandpainting

Next up Scarhandpainting has taken a shine to Trench Crusade and is reliving his wasted youth of Mordheim campaigning by getting involved in Tomas Pirinen's spiritual successor. His first warband is going to be the fan favourite New Antioch.

Every base is a frame for your miniatures and Scarhand has started off by creating besoke battlefield bases for his warband that give them a "trench'ish" feel. So broken duckboards, barbed wire and kicked up earth is the order of the day. These are a great basis for a cohesive-looking force and while it's simple to grab resin taking the extra time to produce your own as he has raises the look of the unit as a whole.

With a big group of soldiers from Fortress Factory Inc prepped and ready for painting Scarhand has decided to to let his creativity loose on the miniatures and paint one colour at a time rather than have a selected colour palette prepared in advance. This is a great way of painting and letting the process guide you although it can be frightening for some people to not have an end in mind at the beginning it lets you fully engage with the minis.

The problem with painting in that way is returning to the collection later either to expand the force or complete it. In this case, Scarhand had to split his force into two between work projects and so has used the project to record his colour palette that he is using and this is something I can really appreciate. The ability to revisit a project months or years later and still have the recipes available should never be overlooked and it's always nice to be able to steal more talented artists ideas 🙂

Old-School 40K Ork Village by shinnentai

Our final winner for this week is Shinnentai and his amazing work on terrain for Warhammer 40,000 that tickles my fuzzy little terrain building brain in a happy way. In a world of 3D printing this old school oldhammer project harkens back to my youth (and also my present) with a range of homemade buildings and terrain pieces. The pinnacle of which is this amazing orky garage.

The garage is a superb example of the model makers art and while the build of this piece is a worthy winner itself I thought checking out the detailing that has been put into its completed form needed to be shown off to all and sundry.

The advertising hoardings on the side of the building are outstanding. They evoke the missing feeling of the orks as the galaxy's cheeky football-hooliganesque race. This isn't any of the modern grimdark nonsense where orks roam around living in Stig's dump, but an actual civilisation with a massive dollop of humour dropped on top.

The outside of the building isn't alone in getting the detailed treatment though, the inside of both floors is fully detailed which is a great touch even if they aren't often seen. The oil-stained floor and tools on the bench along with a mug of fungus coffee...or maybe mushroom tea?... all sit ready for the next speed-freak to rock up and demand a touch of the mekboyz magic to make his ride go fasta!
