Community Spotlight: Barons’ Wars, Heresy-era Blood Angels & Jedi!
June 25, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
The Barons' War by taochi
We start this week with the hotness that is The Barons' War. taochi has been putting together a great project covering the creation of their warband/retinue for use in The Barons' War as they dip a toe into Medieval warfare.
The force is made up of some of the older metal miniatures that were available from Footsore. The idea is that the retinue will be built for use in the game ahead of taochi diving into the new plastic miniatures from Wargames Atlantic somewhere down the line. Miniatures that you see here are for the Chosen Men, a faction designed by taochi to give them a chance to personalise their force for the game.
Currently, the soldiers are wearing the colours of Lord Theobald of Ashenmere, but each use shields bearing their own unique heraldry from their respective families. The shield designs for the sergeants were done using inspiration from the use of A.I, which came up with some themes and thoughts.
I like that you can either go down the route of painting your The Barons' War miniatures to match actual factions from the period or choose your own characters and go in a different direction. The Barons' War featured a lot of warring parties so I'm sure you can take some liberties with who fights where and when. I also really like that taochi adds the strings to the bows on his archers, really adding to the "action poses" of the figures.
Blood Angels Praetor by guillotine
Next up, we're going to a different style of civil war and one that rocked an entire galaxy. Here, guillotine has been painting up a new figure for Warhammer: The Horus Heresy and in this case, a Blood Angels Praetor.
guillotine does amazing work and this is no different. I think the red armour looks stunning and I like the subtle blend between the dark and the light rather than it being quite so harsh. Twin that with the rich gold and you've got a Praetor who matches up to the gleaming splendor of the Blood Angels.
I think that The Horus Heresy is a time where the Space Marines were at the height of their power and so the painting should echo that, especially when it comes to characters. In the early days, gloriously stunning warriors were fighting each other in gleaming armour and seeing that on show is great. Yes, things get grim and muddy soon enough, but I think that here we're seeing something a bit different on display.
What's quite nice about this project is that it also feels like it isn't wedded to the idea of this turning into a full army any time soon. Sometimes, it pays to pick up a miniature and just have some fun painting it. I'm sure that it will join guillotine's other Blood Angels soon enough, but I like that they take a break from time to time and paint up something different. A great miniature and one making me think about Blood Ravens and red armour once again...
Shatterpoint Jedi by chaosgorka
Last but not least, we're having a look at some more of the work by chaosgorka covering the excellent Star Wars: Shatterpoint which has recently captured my attention.
They have most recently been painting up some of the new figures from the latest boxes. Firstly, we have the fantastic Kit Fisto who is shown leaping into the action with lightsaber at the ready. I think chaosgorka paints their miniatures beautifully and I like that they tend to paint bright and poppy figures rather than defaulting to dark colours to make life easy. It's a great comic book look that suits Shatterpoint well.
As well as the charming smile on Kit Fisto, you've also got his Jedi Knight companion, Nahdar Vebb. He looks equally awesome and maybe you can end up turning things in his favour on the tabletop when fighting out his battles against the Separatists. Great colour work, highlighting and shading, which brings the miniature to life.
The set also features a clutch of Clone Troopers led by Clone Commander Fil here. You can see more of the Clone Troopers over on the project link above but it's ace to see how lovely that white has come out. Some very clean painting on the red/orange and the grey completes the look and this set is doing its best to drag me towards the Clone Wars era rather than sticking with the Rebellion and the Empire like I had intended! Maybe I do need Obi-Wan and the rest now?
