Bot War by lukeprior1

We start off this week looking at some Bot War via lukeprior1. They have been embarking on a journey into the game after having the second edition version of the boxed game sitting on a shelf for a while. Informed by the card art, they are seeking to get their collection painted up and ready for the tabletop.

BotWar #1 by lukeprior1

The miniatures started out with some texture on the bases and a good undercoat before they dove in with some Speedpaints and washes in order to make the miniatures pop. Throughout, lukeprior1 had been following the card art as a rule, which means that you're not having to worry about matching colours when you've got a reference right before your eyes.

BotWar #2 by lukeprior1

A few highlights here and there, based on the colours used, makes each of the figures pop and with a little bit of work, these figures are looking like they should be ready for the tabletop in no time at all. Going back to following the card art, lukeprior1 decided to deviate in some cases with what just feels right. Once you've got the hang of painting some of the collection it's not a big step to start inventing and playing around.

BotWar #3 by lukeprior1

The Speedpaints are doing the job effectively and making these miniatures a doddle to paint. When you're playing with smaller-scale figures, if you can get them done to a tabletop standard quickly, then it leaves more time for playing games. The bold colour choices really work across the collection and I think this is a great start to the Bot War boxed set. Hopefully, they will be on the tabletop soon.

Sorcerer Kings Mahut by robojoel

Next up, we're going to be looking at just one miniature but a single piece that has been painted in an interesting style. Here, you can see the work by robojoel on one of the Sorcerer Kings' Mahut.

Sorcerer Kings Mahut #1 by robojoel

The idea behind the painting for this particular figure was to give it a marble effect and I think you'd say that robojoel has succeeded on that front! The white body looks immaculate with the little blue veins running through it and you really get the feeling of this being a statue brought to life.

If this has you intrigued, robojoel has delved into the process of painting this and provided folks with a breakdown as part of their project entry for this beast. In addition to tackling the marble, robojoel has also done some sterling non-metallic metal work on the miniature, which really shows off and looks great on a piece of this size.

When you see the finished look of the miniature, you get a great sense of how it has all come together and how the idea cements itself. The shimmering blues across the face of the marble really sell the effect and make it all the more realistic. An absolutely brilliant project and a great use of different techniques to use something utterly different from what's out there.

Winter Fallschirmjager by firelock22

Last but not least, we're having a look at some work by firelock22 on a nice set of Winter Fallschirmjager for use in Warlord Games' Bolt Action. They started out with the basic box of troops for the Germans are have plans to expand, going with a winter theme, which works very well with the current focus of the game.

Winter Fallschirmjager #1 by firelock22

firelock22 has done a great job on the miniatures, running with some test miniatures (above) to get their head around the scheme and how they wanted to approach painting the rest of the miniatures. I am a supporter of the idea of doing test miniatures first, so you get a feel for the process and how long it might take you to paint a handful of miniatures for larger units. You can then refine the steps you take based on that.

Winter Fallschirmjager #2 by firelock22

The winter coats look great and I like that the Fallschirmjager give you a chance to not just go full white but also throw in muddy colourful jackets and those warm, tan trousers. Great use of quick Contrast/Speedpaint has made these come together very quickly and I think the scheme looks spot on.

I am also a big fan of the basing for these miniatures. Going with the slightly slushy snow is a more natural take than going for stark, white drifts of snow. It gives you an idea of the ever-changing weather that these soldiers were fighting in and doesn't detract from the miniatures themselves.
