Romano British by SirHumphreyRtd

We start off this week's Community Spotlight but having a look at one of the Spring Clean Hobby Challenges by SirHumphreyRtd. He is working his way through some old miniatures in his collection that are going to be part of a growing Romano British army. The idea is that the force can be used in Hail Caesar, SAGA and Midgard Heroic Battles; a good clutch of games.

The current selection of miniatures are looking pretty good and there's a nice mixture of different miniatures already sitting in SirHumphreyRtd's collection. These Welsh and Romano British above are going to be forming the basis of this project and eventually, the entire force will be able to play all three games mentioned above and so will need to be modelled as such.

Work recently has been going into painting up the Comitatus that will form part of a Late Roman force.

SirHumphreyRtd has gone through the painting process that brought these miniatures to life. It all starts off with a heavy drybrush that can then be built on as you add more colours. I really like the dynamic nature of the miniatures that SirHumphreyRtd has added into the regiment above and the bright colours fluttering from the back of the standard really help to make the unit pop.

The shield transfers also really help to elevate the unit and tie everything together as well. When you start to view the army from afar, you'll get a sense of grandeur about the army, even if it's just a skirmishing force. There is much more to come as part of this project, so make sure to keep an eye on what SirHumphreyRtd is doing, especially if you're interested in Midgard Heroic Battles and want to know how to form a force.

Vikings by itchardpirate

Next up, we're sticking with the Dark Ages but instead looking at the other end of it. itchardpirate has been working away on a set of Matt Bickley Vikings from the fairly recent Kickstarter alongside Footsore Miniatures.

Vikings #1 by itchardpirate

itchardpirate has been tracking their progress day by day when it comes to this project as each of the Vikings comes to life with lovely paint schemes. I like that they are breaking the miniatures down into smaller and easily manageable portions. Speedpaint is helping the process but I think that itchardpirate has worked really well to produce a cohesive paint scheme for the warband whilst also making them feel individual in their own right.

Vikings #2 by itchardpirate

As mentioned, this is a project that is still in the work-in-progress stage but it's been great following what itchardpirate has been doing and the step-by-step process. It means that if you've got some of these miniatures in your own collection, you could use this as a guide to help you with painting your own miniatures. They really are very dynamic as well and Bickley might have actually made the best Vikings ever.

The Marmite Little Big Man shield transfers have also made it into the project and itchardpirate has gone through a neat breakdown on how they got them set on the shields without too much hassle.

Vikings #3 by itchardpirate

I certainly appreciate that and I think this could be a handy tutorial on how to get those transfers onto shields without throwing everything across the room. You should keep an eye on this project as more and more of the Vikings get painted. I am fascinated to see how more of the characters come together alongside the rank and file that we're seeing here.

Samurai Battle Report by orinoco

Last but not least, we're switching up and looking at a battle report rather than painting. orinoco has been charting the battles that they have been playing at their local wargaming club, the Kirriemuir Wargames Club. The most recent of the battles was a Samurai one from the 16th Century set up across a lovely-looking battlefield.

Samurai Battle Report #1 by orinoco

The rules that they are using for this battle report are called Gleaming Katanas by Rich Jones which is based on Black Powder but with the shorter movement values found within the Pike & Shotte rules. This is a great example of what Gerry was talking about a couple of weeks ago where you should mix and match rules to suit what you're going to be playing.

Samurai Battle Report #2 by orinoco

Photos were taken during breaks in play and it's great seeing all of the little notes on the images giving us an idea of what action is being undertaken. Each side had secret discussions to decide on their plan of action with one side trying to defend the river crossing and the other looking to get across as quickly as possible. With this in mind, it meant that the battle had some flux to it.

Samurai Battle Report #3 by orinoco

I won't spoil how the battle ended but as you can see, there was plenty of manoeuvring involved as either side jostled for control of the bridges and the river. The miniatures came from a range of places including Dixon Miniatures, Steel Fist Miniatures and Perry Miniatures to name just three.

The battle looked really fun and if you're seeking to dive in and see more of what is being played at the club, follow the project. Maybe you'll get inspired to play something yourself!
