Community Spotlight: Gundam, Retro Space Orks & Warriors Of Rohan
February 26, 2025 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Gundam by demonsub
We start off this week with a look at what demonsub has been doing. They have taken the plunge into the world of Gundam and Gunpla hobby. The focus of their project is to build the Real Grade Gundam Hi-Nu (RX-93-v2 Hi-v) and they have been taking the opportunity to document the process and talk through each stage from beginning to end.
What's neat about this project is that it showcases the start-to-finish elements of exploring the Gunpla hobby. A lot of the time, you see folks just smashing together kits rather quickly but once you get deeper into the range, you start to get more complicated kits. Building these and finishing them off is as time-intensive a hobby as playing any wargaming where you build kits and get painting.
demonsub has been showing this with their project and their dive into some of the more intricate elements of the Gunpla hobby. They have been showing off panel-lining techniques and the use of paint pens to pick out some of the key elements like the eyes here.
It's cool seeing the process as the kit moves from the skeleton stage to the more finalised look that you see below. I love that the kits are so in-depth and you can get a lot out of Gunpla if you decide to invest your time in it. I don't think I have been fully converted to the idea of playing around in the Gundam space but I enjoy the fact that so many folks are starting to explore it as another hobby alongside traditional miniature building and painting.
The project isn't finished yet and there are a few more stages to go through. Make sure to check out what demonsub has been doing in their project, especially if you're Gundam curious and not sure about taking the plunge. We have a few Gundam folk showing off their work at the moment so it's worth exploring the hobby.
Retro Space Orks by richsh
Next up, we're having a look at a return to retro from richsh. They have been painting up a bunch of retro Space Orks or Sporks (love that term) and whilst it has taken a while for them to return to their project, it has been rather spiffing to see.
There's something awesome about these old-school Orks getting painted up using more modern techniques that just works. I think richsh has done a solid job on these two characters here that join their wider range of retro figures with an Oldhammer feel to them. I really like the way the skin has come together and the brighter spot colours with those eyes and that mega zit.
The same goes for this fellow who is preparing a rather nifty-looking fist to crump some foes and send them packing. The darker armour tones work really nicely to make the Ork skin pop and it is an effective scheme. I also like the basing, especially with the random bricks strewn about. It gives off proper destructive vibes.
When you see all the Orks together, it's awesome to see how the scheme gels. A lot of these old miniatures are getting a new coat of paint and a chance to shine and that's great to see. Do you have some retro figures in a cupboard somewhere that would be fun to paint up again?
Warriors Of Rohan by thedace
Last but not least, we're looking at some of the work by thedace who has been painting up the new Warriors Of Rohan from the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game. Using a range of different paints including some of the Instant range by Scalecolour, they were attempting to get everything painted up quickly!
thedace has documented their approach throughout the project and shown off some of the techniques and the paints that they used at each stage. I think the overall effect is really good and I think the Warriors have come together very nicely and in a quicker time frame than my own! I still haven't got an undercoat on mine.
When you see all the miniatures arrayed liked this the effect is complete. Individually, you have some fine-looking miniatures but once you see the full group you see why the choices have been made in terms of the painting. It actually ends up giving off a vibe of the tones and colour choices from the anime which is a bonus tick in thedace's column for this project.
I particularly liked the cloaks and that really nice contrast between the deep folds of the cloak and the lighter high points works super well. A great set and finished off nicely with some good basing that suits the lands of the Rohirrim. I can't wait to see what thedace does with the Hill Tribes and the buildings as well as the characters!
