Community Spotlight: Malifaux, Retro Eldar & Tiny Relics
June 11, 2025 by brennon
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We'll be getting stuck into lots of great-looking miniature wargaming painting and hobbying this week...
...always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Malifaux by MontagueBlackwood
We start off this week with MontagueBlackwood showcasing the work that is going into painting up some new miniatures for the fourth edition of Malifaux that is just around the corner. They have been working on some shiny miniatures for the colourfully weird and wonderful world of Malifaux.
What was very fun about this project was that it was a great showcase of the amazing sculpts that you can get from Wyrd for Malifaux. The creative team behind the world and the miniatures always manage to find something fun and interesting to build for their world and I think you'd say that's the case here with what you're seeing here.
This was also a great project for showing off the weird older builds that you get when diving into Malifaux miniatures. Some of them are just insane like the fellows above but once they have been built, they look superb and I think MontagueBlackwood did a sterling job on both the yellow and the blue here on the miniatures above.
I also really like the bases that the miniatures get, really giving them a sense of place and making them feel decidedly in-world rather than just gaming pieces for a miniatures game. Going with a more Far Eastern themed warband also means that you can go to town with the colours, and MontagueBlackwood has done exactly that. Hopefully, this lays the groundwork for an excellent dive back into Malifaux.
Eldar by grantinvanman
Next up, we're going to be exploring some of the painting going into an excellent Eldar/Aeldari army for Warhammer 40,000 by grantinvanman. They have been digging out some classic miniatures and giving them a seriously awesome paint job.
This project is a little bit of a love letter to the Eldar as they were grantinvanman's army of choice back during the second edition of the game. So, seeing these miniatures back on the tabletop with a gorgeous mixture of both older and newer miniatures is brilliant to see. As someone who loves Eldar, it was excellent to see Wraithlords featured recently in this army build and I particularly like the mix of colours here, going from that teal through to the bright pinks and purples.
You can see that even with one of the older miniatures, the scheme works very well and they don't look out of place next to each other. I must admit that there is plenty of attention to detail on show here, especially when working in the Harlequin patterns to help theme the force. I think this is going to be a gorgeous army on the tabletop when it has all come together.
I also really liked the very neon take on the Falcon Grav Tank which is a wonderful mixture of those blues and pinks/purples alongside more of the Harlequin patterning. This is making me feel like I could enjoy painting some bigger vehicles in my Eldar army as well. I tend to avoid them but this is making me intrigued by the process...
Relics by civilcourage
Last but not least, we're turning to the work of civilcourage who has been working their way through an excellent set of Relics miniatures. Following in the footsteps of John, they are working on some Britanan miniatures for this gorgeous and long-forgotten gem of the wargaming world.
These miniatures were picked up back in the day when Relics was run by Tor Gaming. When TTCombat came along and re-released the miniatures, civilcourage was encouraged to dive back in and finally paint up this set. I think they have already done a sterling job on these Britanans.
I think the Britanans were my favourites, second only to the Ridend. You've got marvellous red and white uniformed soldiers marching to battle and they all happen to be puppets. What's not to like about the theme behind these miniatures?
The flashes of red and white work really well here and I think civilcourage going with a basic basing technique helps to frame the miniatures and highlight the paint schemes.
As you can see, the miniatures have been coming together nicely and this might be the nudge that John needs to get stuck into his own project! He was going to build a lovely storage box for his Relics as well. I wonder when that will become a reality? Drop your thoughts down below and nag John to get his stuff painted!
