Ths QRS for Warpath seems useful from what I’ve seen
For rules learning I like just jumping in with both feet. set some figures out and open the rulebook
In that whole section of rules discussion John looked he was surfing the web and trying to decide which Gundam to buy next
I’d watch the odd video on rules just to see and get a feel for the flow of the game
I have a rather scattergun approach to learning a new game. I start by getting the rulebook and flicking back and forth to get the flavor and scope, perhaps pick up some rules or structures from other games, and then look at the game structure itself as an overview. Then I like to talk one of my friends to play a game or two. These games are usually full of forgotten (deliberately or not) and misread rules, but the game itself now sits in my brain, giving me hooks to help read the rules later. If I find a good… Read more »
Don’t you just love John’s editing. Dedication to trolling, cutaways. Bravo.
Also Gerry I’m shorter than Shay and and I’m shite at tabletop games so maybe its not a height thing
That’s just natural talent you have. Nothing to do with height
I also choose to believe it is a talent and a good thing
MAybe ask Justin about his Conquest Army … 😉
We should also poke Warren with a stick to get his response on the matter too 😄
It’s the closest thing to the Warmachine journeyman league we’ve seen around here.
I hate being the person who always has to teach people the rules to a game. I usually forget something and they look at you like your the idiot. Go learn it yourself. So many rules of course I’m gonna forget stuff. With my home brew cheese riot game it was easier because I was asking people to let me know what would be better as we went along. I gave everyone their own reference sheet and it was all about helping me. People took more ownership of the game that way and there was less pressure on me.
Thanks guys I didn’t expect to see my stuff in there. Great job to all the projects. @avernos the program I used was 3D Builder, the free program that came with Windows which they have, like morons, got rid of. Drag and drop, no fuss, anyone can use it. You can do the same thing with the fancy programs but they’re too complex for me. I’ve done up a whole Sci-Fi/40K Infantry Regiment with custom uniforms and guns that were converted in the same way, very basic stuff. I should do up a project for them at some point. I… Read more »
Happy Backstagers! 00:00 Oh noes, wrong video again with splitscreen stuff in the front. 04:15 Ronny the errant runner. 07:45 Mic go boom 08:23 Is this the “extra burns for Justin” edition? 15:00 2016… the beforetimes! 19:45 QRS are great. Especially in the first *humph* many games. 22:30 Rules translations *hides in corner* make it go away! 27:00 Demos. Can’t remember when I last played on of those 34:00 Hit them with all you got! XD 37:00 split screen feature to avoid copyright theft! XD 50:00 learning by reading is hard for me too. learning by doing is easier. 53:00… Read more »
Lovely to see some hobby from Justin. Look forward to seeing more as your campaign continues. On learning a new game. It is surprising to me that people seem to look at learning a game differently to any other learning activity. It seems that because we like the context we want to fast forward through the learning process that in any other context we know will take a bit of time and effort. Psychologically speaking learning rules is the same as learning anything else. Each of us will have strategies that work well. Generally though a variety of techniques are… Read more »
Happy Sunday.
If it’s a really hard to read or complex game (such as 40k 9th edition) I’ll make my own quick reference sheet and that generally forces the rules into my head. Otherwise I’ll learn the main mechanics of the game and play a very basic solo game just to be familiar.
For me most of the work in learning a new rules set if getting to know rulebook and where to find stuff in the book as I play my first few games.
Happy Sunday… Justin trolling brilliant 🤣🤣🤣
Even if there’s a translation of the rules … it rarely goes beyond the core rulebook. And then there’s the lore. With Sci Fi and Fantasy there’s often a lot of puns that are heavily language/culture dependent. It takes a genius translator to get it done. It has to be said that writing good rules and explaining them is hard. It also helps if both the rules and players are not super obsessive about being exact. Stuff like ‘squad coherency’ often feels like it is written for rules lawyers instead of actual people. If you can strip stuff and the… Read more »
I think it’s odd to see the visual in bifocal view but it did give a slight zoom. I blame Gerry not wearing his glasses for that. Its good to get the player action in video sometimes as it clears up some of the confusion during reading. Multiple entries for related items not directly pertinent are also generally addressed by these. On the topic of the Read/Roll/Repeat I’ve come across this as I start into 5 Parsecs flFrom Home. Hooray for BBDs in top form. Having a browse this is helpful for getting me off my butt at my new… Read more »
I think Justin on mute could be your 2nd You Tube short. The 1st one being Boyes.
Ronnie’s colleague did indeed make it back https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c1ljrgpg7qro
For learning a game, even if I’m going to be taught, I like to look at the rulebook so I at least have a gist of what’s going on before hand. Quick Reference Sheets are a must and I will make my own if one is not available. I will use videos to supplement my reading. The only video I’ve used instead of the ruleset is Warlord’s Black Powder because it’s not a game I would immediately pick to play, but will occasionally play at my local club. I thought Mantic’s videos on Deadzone when the most recent edition was… Read more »
Happy Sunday on a Tuesday has I was away on Sunday but why not Monday then one ask’s…..well……i couldn’t be arsed.
Definetelly shorter rule teaching video explanation
Excellent work on the show, always love a John edit 😂
I like rules videos to watch before and then after I’ve given the rules a read. My brain doesn’t take in rules from reading alone.
