Happy Sunday….my god a show with out the bros…has the world gone mad or am i just hallucinating after my covid jab!!!
Happy Sunday..
Welcome to the XLBS, Free, and welcome to the world of minis painting. There is no right or wrong, just do what works for you. You have joined a great community of creative folks here so you will have no end of people to ask questions of. The Extended Lord of the Rings is one of my Go-To backgrounds while painting but I’m also very fond of Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman audiobooks. Your background in watercolors is going to be very helpful.
Wait, what? Justin has a Missus? Wow, the world really did change during COVID Isolation. No wonder he’s been absent from the Weekenders for so long.
Got to get my Spring Cleaning Challenge figured out.
Thanks for another fun show!
Thank you! It’s been incredible to know that if I need to learn anything, I really don’t have to go far! 😊
Looking forward to seeing your Spring Cleaning Challenge! 🌻

Happy Easter all
@fcostin I recently found this Youtube channel that has a tone of useful videos on painting pretty much anything on a mini : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgptSaRLvd1QH0SURdQNYgg
Thanks a million! I’ll check it out! 😊
the golden button was super cool thanks very much indeed. Happy Sunday everyone.
Fantastic show folks, really enjoyed hearing all about what you’ve been up to. Great buttons well deserved the lot, always love the variety of hobby presented on the show, keep it coming!
Good XLBS, think the mix of Gerry, Free, Ben and Justin works well, nice and relaxing with a good vibe.
Whereas those Johnsons always leave us with an eye spasm and clenching our teeth ;D
Thanks for the golden button, nice surprise and the motivation I need to finish off the last bits and pieces.
The only advice I have for painting is just enjoy it and never get stressed
Great show gang. Gotta get painting!
Nice to see you getting around to using the Dwarf Lords Ben, glad I sent them to you as they would still be in my pile of shame. Can’t wait to see them painted, i like the idea of Ben doing a Ray Winston and Vinny Jones dwarves.
I have always liked the look of Malifaux from when it was released, even though I never got the game I always kept up to date with it. My favourite faction is the Goblins, and I have Ma’Tucket still boxed.
I even backed the KS for Miremarsh Goblins, I just couldn’t help myself. Its still boxed, but I will get to it one day, but for now it’s with the other pile of shame the KS pile that is.
Have a great week everyone.
@dignity I didn’t know you were dating again but if she’s not just tolerant of your gaming but actually wants to join you in the hobby she sounds like a keeper!
My top tips for just starting painting.
First, prepare your mind. I know that sounds a bit zen but it’s important that you start it with the right mindset. This is probably true of almost any hobby, however with painting the results stay with and worse, you can compare them to everyone else who has been painting ages. So you need to put yourself into the right state of mind, that of a learner, and then manage your expectations.
The two big expectations to manage are your start and end points. Accept that your first few models probably won’t be as good as you would like. Accept that your best model probably isn’t going to be winning international awards. That’s not to say both of these things will be true, but don’t set those expectations when you first start out. Painting is a hobby and it should, primarily, be relaxing and fun not stressful and demoralizing.
Linked to that is allowing yourself to paint the miniatures you like. This is where I disagree with a few YouTubers. I see so many people saying “Oh I could never paint something like that, I am rubbish” and they shy away from buying expensive or highly detailed miniatures. Of course you can paint something like that, whatever that is. Literally buy it, get your brushes out and paint it. Will it look as good as someone else’s? Maybe, maybe not. Does that matter? Nope. Paint for you, if you like a miniature so much, buy it and paint it to the best standing you can and be proud of your work. I also believe that you will learn more quickly painting miniatures that you actually enjoy than buying cheap ones that you don’t just to “practice on”. When you are a little more advanced and you want to learn specific techniques then maybe you can consider buying a load of cheap plastic crap that you have no use for other than to try out techniques on – miniatures you might not ever finish to completion. But generally speaking paint the models you like and get as much enjoyment out of the experience as you can.
Brushes. Always buy good brushes even when you’re a noob. You don’t have to rush out and buy Artis Opus or Windsor & Newton, but maybe consider something like Rosemary and Co, you can pick them up for about a fiver. A cheap brush will yield poor performance, whether straight away or it just dies quickly. Also use brush cleaner to preserve your brushes, something like Master Brush Soap.
The last piece of advice is practice. You can watch all the YouTube videos in the world but the one thing that they can’t give you is brush control and brush control is the key to every single technique you will want to learn. Brush control only comes with practice.
