Hey guys,
Busy day with my sons custody visit and having his birthday party. I also had a d&d session while he was asleep and did some painting when I got home. Back to work tomorrow with a night shift (I will divvy out points for the previous weekender then, when I have free time).
My pledge:
Complete 2x Citadel Woods (2x bases and 6x trees in total)
Complete 2x AoS Objective Markers
Attempt to complte my Temple of Skulls (1x large oop terrain kit)
Work on my albionnicans (while I’d like to say ‘finish them all’, I do have a lot of other things to do. 7x models)
Post pictures of other finished work from the week
Work on Star Wars Legion
1) Grocery store sales and themed events in online games are alerting me to the fact that Halloween is approaching. What are your thoughts on the event, either the commercial aspect or its historical origins?
I like Halloween. Sometimes Im working. Its great to go trick or treat when I have my son for it, its fun to go on a night out in costume, to do Halloween themed gaming, have the decorations up, and the general feel of the season. I don’t like people using it as an excuse for poor/lazy/slutty costumes (both men and women here), or certain people doing antisocial/violent/vandalism type stuff. I guess I prefer the more pure, innocent, fun, kid friendly side of it. I do not mind the commercial aspect.
As for the traditions every culture seems to have one. If you look back at Ireland far enough it celebrates the Celtic new year (also the harvest). So, it is valid.
Fond memories I have are taking my son up a cold neighbourhood with his friend going house to house getting stuff in his cute little paw patrol outfit. I also have my own fond childhood memories of trick or treating and costumes.
One year for Halloween I ended up in hospital getting my Appendix out and missing the little event they did in the ward when I feel asleep.
Also in recent years I wore a subzero costume on a night out. We went to a house party and pub, nobody seemed to be too interested in any of the groups costumes. We then went to a nightclub and it was a different story. Lots of people dug the subzero outfit. At one point I walked passed two guys who already had a few drinks. They raised an eyebrow and then recognised the costume. One came right up into my face, crossed his arms and yelled MORTAL KOMBAT
2) What is one hobby product or accessory that you thought was gimmicky or a waste of time up until the point where you actually owned one and discovered how useful it was?
Army Painter Varnish. I thought people spending the effort dipping their models into the varnish and shaking it to dry off was crap. Even when I saw the results and liked it to a degree, it still seemed scammy to me that once you reached a certain point you could not longer dip.
Then a slightly different version came out in dropper bottles: it is now a core pillar in the foundation of my painting with everything. Soft tone for gold, skin and browns, strong tone for reds, other browns and dirty metals and dark tone for metal. It is a heavens-send.
3) As humantity moves out to colonise space in generations to come do you think the idea of national identity or traditions will still be relevant or will they all fall by the wayside?
I think they will still remain relevant but gloabalisation will continue. Take modern european architecture in aesthetics compared to the 1990s, 1980s, 1970s and going back 100 to 200 years; a large amount of creative expression, cultural identity and individualism has gone by the wayside. A lot of European cities in different countries can be very ‘same-ey’ in parts. Style, look, sentiment and sense of self fall by the wayside due to efficiency, profit, budgets and saving money.
More from me tomorrow!
