Hmm not sure on the classic “boardgame” squares (or diamonds in this case), at first thought I’d assumed due to the use of roller-skates it would be using a system not unlike the Star Wars Space fighter game (with turn templates and movement rulers) to give a more “free” aspect to the movement.
I think I first saw this being used with the old Tabletop Games “Starhound” game, we have many “sports” games that already are using a classic board game movement (Bloodbowl, Dreadball). Perhaps to stand out, the game could have used this free movement system that seems to fit the aspect of skates (roller-skates or Ice-skates) where you can’t turn on a dime as easily as if you were on foot.
But then again the “boardgame with miniatures” genre is the hot seller on Kickstarter these days, so it probably make more business sense to go with the appeal this brings than the ravings on one demented loon on the forums 😀
PS the minis DO look really nice, any shots of a bare mini with this clear resin helmet you were talking about?
