The contrast thing looks interesting.  Seems to be like a thickish ink, so will stain the top, but flow into the deeper areas and give a deeper colour.  I wonder if the special undercoats have any particular features e.g. are they glossy to let the paint flow better or rougher to slow the paint down a bit.  Will be interesting to hear what the experts on the interweb have to say about it.
