@mage – 25 Guineas! I thought it was just me that lived in a fantasy world.

Since we are sharing our hobby-block stories I thought I would have a go…

The first time I stalled I didn’t even notice. When our first child was born, Eve, I had been gaming and modelling for the best part of 20 years. Child appears and things become different. They don’t ‘change’, but they become different. It was about three monthe before I even picked-up a WD. Not because I didn’t have the spare time – I just didn’t bother. GW opened a store in the Metro Centre and there was cheap stuff if you were there before the doors opened. I’m sure I bought Man ‘O’ War and stuff to go with it. However, after a few games I just forgot about it. At the same time I was also training way less. Not for any reason other than it was just not on my mind. You get the idea.

That lasted a few years. During that time I would find the odd WD in a newsagents or when I went on a train journey. I would see new minis and get fired up. Going to Edinburgh I picked up the WD that was showing off the never before seen plastic Dark Eldar. It turned out the hotel is around the corner from GW so can you guess what I bought? When we got home I built 2-3 warriors and that was it.

A long while after that my friend went up into our loft to do something to the boiler (he is certified) and he moved some boxes and spotted Space Hulk. He brought it down and I showed it to him. We had a couple of games and he was hooked. That got me going…he is into all the Viking imagery and it was when they had just released the Space Wolf battleforce boxes for £50. John convinced me to start playing 40K so he could buy the models. We bought the rulebook and some minis. He bought four battleforces and the shop manager gave him all the old metal minis they had just taken off the shelves. There was a carrier bag full. If we weren’t parked outside in John’s car we would have never made it home without the bottom falling out of the bag. Gary Warriner rules.

We bought BFG and started playing BB. Then he got a girlfriend and wasn’t allowed out to play anymore. That isn’t me being sarcastic either. I haven’t heard from him in 14 years!

Another gap. I bought a few minis, but it would be out of bordom. I would be out somewhere and would pass by a GW – in another town. No real spark.

In the mean time we had another child, Jamie. He always liked the minis I had about the place and just before his 10th birthday he told me I wanted to start his own army. Armed with his birthday money he stomped into GW and bought a Tau army without a single word from me. He even payed for it with his own money. He sat with me and put them together and he wasn’t too bad…must be genetic. When he had a few units ready we set-up a little game. Tau Vs. Black Templars. I got my arse handed to me on a plate by the end of the fourth turn. My Terminators decided not to turn up and Jamies first shot against my Rhino (full of BT’s and a Chaplain) destroyed it and half the passengers. That got me going again.

Finding BoW/OTT really got me going even more. We discovered Infinity.

During that time I had a few health issues and spent some time down on Ward C. Another way of saying the padded room and the electric. Nothing heavy, but I have been there a few times since. I also had a small accident, but it lead to me having several strokes. Small, but one of them left permanent damage to my brain stem. Talk about a bummer – a couple of days before my birthday too. Having a full working left arm/hand is pretty useful to my hobbying activities and it that really put me down. Having this hobby has been amazing at keeping me from doing something stupid. No joke. People I have ‘met’ here, and the BoW staff, have been so supportive towards me and my family. That kept me doing something until I started to recover. This really is a fantastic community. Some weirdos.

Short version: if being here doesn’t fix you the sell all your stuff and take up something useless, like Kendo or metal detecting. However, if you do then i’ll give you £20 for all your DZC stash!

Try our “unofficial” weekender. Officially approved by OTT too.

Jamie’s birthday in 2008. We hid the rest of the stuff we bought so Heather wouldn’t see how much we really spent!
