I agree that both Ferengi and Klingons have a society that is too silly to be viable. The sad part is that back in TNG when the Ferengi were first encountered they were completely different. I guess a cheap stereotype is easier to write than a complex alien race, which is why so few shows have good alien characters.

The one thing I liked about DS9 was that they willing to go down a darker path than TNG had done. The political/religious violence in the initial seasons was what made it so good.
