@timchubb – holy shit! I’m amazed we didn’t cross the streams – my wife and I lived aboard our narrowboat for over a year, up in Llangollen (about ten years ago). This is too spooky!

I’ve had experience of dodgy Italian wiring when we were over in Sicily last Feb – “what’s that funny buzzing noise? I haven’t got any pedals in my input chai….. btzzzzt”. I literally drove a 4ft metal spike into the ground outside my mate’s house and ran the earth (from my UK multi-plug adapter) into it! He promised he’d get his electrics looked at. I’m not convinced he ever did…
