I’d also recommend Discourse as a platform, although I appreciate the previously mentioned concerns about the forum then being separate from the site. I wonder a bit about that though – how integrated is the forum to the main site currently in terms of accessibility and function? Clicking on a link in the main header banner takes you to the main forum page – arguably that could redirect to a Discourse (or other) forum with no loss of function. The only loss would be the side bar of forum posts, which if I’m honest is pretty lost on the main front page of the site, especially if you are browsing on a mobile device.

My gut instinct is that having the forum hosted away from the main site won’t have that much impact.

A point at a slight tangent, but there’s very little on the main site that even mentions the Discord channel. If you are indeed a causal visitor to the site, you might pick on from the Weekender that there is a Discord, but there’s no obvious pathway to join. However the community is to grow, be it via a forum or Discord, it needs to be open, easily accessible with an obvious presence to encourage people to join in.
