the older style minis are definitely an acquired tast, unless you remember seeing them when they were ‘new’.
The biggest problem with GW minis is that there are no viable alternatives. Raging Heroes is close, but that has its own set of things that may be a bit too nudity much for some. Everyone else is so ‘normal’ because they don’t do the stupendously high fantasy / gothic sci fi style that GW does. Granted … similar things happen with any fictional figure range outside of their IP (the Slaine or Dredd ranges come to mind), but somehow GW’s minis are forever tainted/limited to the ranges they were designed for.
I bet you can pick a Stargrave crew set and use them as Rebels in Legion. It might look a bit odd, but not completely out of touch.
Try using GW minis for anything other than their own settings … if the absurd scale doesn’t screw you over then the skulls and other crap that is attached to them will. The new necromunda space dwarves are probably the first that could work in alternate settings without too much trouble.
