As we get older we tend to hold on the past and try to make ourselfs believe it was better. This is true of war gaming as it is with most things in life. I think part of the problem is we cannot re-create that child like wonder we had as adults with such ease. For reasons I am not sure it seems to be replaced with morose nature and a general attitude to anything new as being negative. A large part if often looking down on people that fail to understand how much better it was in my day.
The old historical players used to scoff at all the warhammer models why would you want to play with Orks and Space Men when you could be fighting over waterloo. We just nodded thinking how out of touch they were. But now I see a lot of those once kids scoffing at the new generation. Ironically a lot of those Ork players are now fighting battles over waterloo another trend as we get older seems to drifting into historical games as well.
I do like the old models but not because they are great or better than the models today because they invoke part of that childhood they are the models I spent the most time with. However I do embrace what we have in the hobby today. For long while I was quite negative missing the lost of the Warhammer Fantasy and my Bretonnian forces. As I dipped my toes back into the hobby I found that spark with the new systems and new models that I did when I was younger. The figures today are just amazing and we have such a wide range of choice.
So yes honestly the figures of today are better than the old school models if it is just about quality. That is not to say there is not something to love in the old ones but technically the quality is not as good as today.
