It’s Thursday again before I even checked the forum posts. There seems to be some correlation between my drifting off from work on a Thursday afternoon as I check out new songs to try out at the local jam night and remembering to check in on the OTT forums. Anyway, I guess it’s better late than never?

It’s a while since I made a pledge, but I’m very much up for joining in with Orktober.
So much, in fact, that the printer has already gone brrrrrr and I’ve a couple of new orks already primed and drybrushed ready for a bit of the old slapchopping. I even took photos as I went (in case I get around to writing it up in a project post one day).

I’ve actually been doing quite a bit of “hobbying” of late – I printed a load of space marines and tried out some different painting techniques – slapchop, speed paint, sponging, stippling and “old fashioned” base, drybrush and wash. It’s been quite a rewarding process. I even varnished a couple and stuck some transfers on (that’s how close I came to nearly finishing a couple of them).
No sooner had I finished my first full batch (I printed about 12-15 minis, and ended up with six or seven I kept and the rest went in the bin) than this video popped up in my watch list. It seems I’m not the only one going back to just having a bit of fun painting:

I’ve still got two space marines I need to finish edge highlighting and to put transfers on four of them to call the entire squad done, but it’s the closest I’ve got to finishing more than one mini for a long time. But now Orktober has kicked in, and I’m already sploshing paint around on my five greenskinned dudes, so there’s no guarantee these space marines won’t sit around half-finished for about six months (just like everything else ends up).
But I’m loving slap-chopping my orks, simply because they’re getting painted (relatively) quickly. Maybe I’ll remember to join the forum post a bit earlier next week, and even post a few photos….

Stencils?
I think I’ve tried them in the past – I can’t get along with my airbrush and usually find they’re more hassle than they’re worth (though having recently discovered what a difference a few transfers can make, I might give them another try for things like hazard stripes, one of these days).

Here’s some music for you
