I have been looking at getting into 10mm wargaming. Personally I love the historical side of things, my friends I play those games with love the fantasy sides of things more. So I have been trying to find a game system that can do all 3 of those things, 10mm, historical and fantasy. At first I was looking at DBA (De Bellis Antiquitatis), DBMM (De Bellis Magistrorum Militum) with HotT (Hordes of the Things) or DBF (De Bellis Fantasiae) and I am still kind of leaning towards that for the historical side of things. Since I do not have access to any of the rulebooks at this time I am unsure how well these armies can interact together in a game.
Then I saw an awesome battle report of the Battle of Sekigahara by Mark’s Game Room. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AsI5kuwddyQ) And they were using Warmaster Revolution. Went digging up that rabbit hole and it is great for fantasy. I then quickly found a Warmaster Ancients and a Warmaster Ancient Armies PDF. But I feel like the historical side is somewhat lacking, not bad, but just abandoned in a corner somewhere kind of feel. And since I have no clue how well the DBx games integrate their historical and fantasy counter parts with each other, I am leaning towards this at this moment more.
So here are my questions;
- Do the DBx historical and fantasy counterparts play well against each other? It doesn’t need to be super balanced, but just fun with maybe some minor house rules.
- What are your opinions on Warmaster Revolution vs. Ancients and Ancient Armies lists?
- Are there any other game systems out there that can accomplish this goal? Preferably with historical depth and a minimum of house rules.
The thing is I just want to play a Hellenistic style army (which is sadly under-represent in fantasy), like the Seleucids, against a horde of orcs or an army of dwarves. Let me know what you think.
May 31, 2025 at 11:02 pm #19311113. Midguard might be an option. There’s stuff on You Tube about it. I’ve recently got the rulebook but haven’t had a good look at it. I know it’s scale agnostic. Units have to have the same frontage and heroes are based seperately. It’s for historical and fantasy.
Some people play Kings of War at 10mm, either by adjusting the unit base size or using the same unit base size and adding more figures. The free Mantic Companion app (website) allows you to look at lists, but not keywords. The Kingdom’s of Men could be used as Seleucids. Spear Phalanax can be upgraded to pike and the mammoth profile can be used for elephants (did they have elephants?). The game does not rely on magic and heroes tend to buff units. Even things like heal could be described as an inspiring speech as units have a nerve value not wounds.
May 31, 2025 at 11:16 pm #1931112I still think Warmaster is a great system and using historics vs fantasy should b too hard. Just depends if you want the selucids to have spells and magic items though should be able to bastardise spells and items from other lists for myself I can’t decide between fantastic battles or Midgard both have their strengths
May 31, 2025 at 11:24 pm #1931113I did look at Kings of War in 10mm, but even with the Kings of War Historical addon I find it even more lacking in historical depth than Warmaster does.
Midgard is something I haven’t looked at, I will have a look tomorrow.
Yes, Seleucids had elephants.
May 31, 2025 at 11:37 pm #1931114With Warmaster, I am just thinking of not using spells and magic items with the Seleucids. The opposing army has to pay points to use them anyway, so I doubt it will be that unbalanced. And otherwise I can houserule them in or out, depending on how we feel about it.
June 1, 2025 at 1:20 am #1931115I think DBA, and its sheer simplicity, is HIGHLY APPEALING – and yes, mixing DBA and Hordes of the Things is possible, and fun.
Midgard would be the modern version go-to for what I just said works. Check your inbox.
June 1, 2025 at 10:43 am #1931158Midgard does look pretty interesting. And if I understand it well I can just base them for Warmaster and then use Warmaster units in a 120mm x 40mm movement tray for Midgard.
https://mogsymakes.net/basing-and-playing-areas-for-midgard-heroic-battles/If I get it right heroes are just based on 25mm rounds, can they also be on 15mm rounds?
This way I can easily do both Midgard and Warmaster. More games for 1 force is always better.
June 1, 2025 at 12:26 pm #1931219Yes, 15mm bases for heroes works. The Midguard rulebook doesn’t state a preferred size for heroes only to use ‘any size and shape of base that is practical for the figure and easily distinguishable’.
June 1, 2025 at 12:49 pm #1931225This is probably a terrible army list, but please have a look at what I concocted in this army builder for Midgard.

June 1, 2025 at 6:40 pm #1931314I’ve not played yet, so I not sure what a good list is and my kindle fire won’t let me look at your list. Looking at the 300 point example lists in the book all (apart from the giants with 7) have 8 to 11 units, with 9 or 10 being most common, and 3 to 4 heroes. All the lists seem to spend nearly their maximum of a 3rd of their points on heroes. Hope this helps?

June 2, 2025 at 6:13 am #1931400@grantinvanman Yes it worked. Thank, now i can make a more informed decision.
June 2, 2025 at 6:27 am #1931401Awesome! Get those hephalumps and woozles on the table and roll some dice. Midgard can do most of what you want. 🐘🧙♀️
