Basically what the title says. The Chinese Government have Incinerated an entire print run of a Call of Cthulu sourebooks from a recent Kickstarter. The reasoning, apparently, is that they found the content to be problematic. Now, I am no fan of the Cthulu mythos but this a bit of an overreaction. However, joking aside, I wonder how many other Kickstarters are looking for alternative printers or worse, panicking that their work will receive similar treatment at the hands of the Chinese Government – who knows what might be next.
March 27, 2019 at 4:14 pm #1367554While something like this can still be expected from CCP I am still shocked that they did this. Basically with this that company takes loses and they backers won’t get they books but CCP doesn’t seem to care because it’s same to those old men running entire country. I wouldn’t blame companies in KS if they would find other places to print after this. After this who would want to take risk with government like that.
March 27, 2019 at 4:32 pm #1367567I also think it’s an overreaction, it’s a weird reaction!
March 27, 2019 at 4:36 pm #1367578I should point out that it is possible that the reason was related to the fact that the source book was set in Shanghai. So it’s possible that they rejected the portrayal of Shanghai as opposed to the Cthulu mythos. That said, it’s China so it’s also highly unlikely we will get any answers.
March 27, 2019 at 4:49 pm #1367581No matter what reason they had it was still overreaction over something that is ultimately harmless and something that people had paid from just because they could and didn’t fit them.
March 27, 2019 at 5:03 pm #1367587It’s China, that’s probably quite restrained. I mean, obviously it’s a bad move likely to make publishers think twice about printing in China.
March 27, 2019 at 5:38 pm #1367593At least they got their deposit returned … but damn this sucks.

March 27, 2019 at 9:13 pm #1367687I tend to avoid buying things that are produced in China anyway, in order to avoid funding poverty wages, etc., etc.. I’d be happy to see this cause a move of production away from China.
Also, i’m now intriged to see what was in the book.
March 27, 2019 at 10:33 pm #1367709This isn’t surprising at all. It’s a Communist Nation that massacred tens of Millions of it’s own people in the name of “Progress” what’s Shocking is that they allow foreign books at all.
“I was shocked to learn that a Chinese Government Officer is required to inspect all books printing including books that are only meant for export”
Yes in case they contain “Wrongthink”. This is a COMMUNIST TOTALITARIAN DICTATORSHIP. Anyone who does business with China should be fully aware of this and should never be surprised that the CCP acts like a tyrant because it is a tyrant.
The Book looks to be set in 1920’s China which is a GIANT NO NO for the CCP.
Basically you have two Major Factions: Reds and Nationalists who WERE ON THE SAME TEAM for a part of the 1920’s then became MORTAL ENEMIES. The reasons I made that in Capitals is that this is a giant issue for the CCP. They control all the History of China, they say who was what and when. The FACT that Chiang Kai-shek was at one time an ally of Mao Zedong is not allowed to exist in China. They don’t care where your book is going, who will read it or anything else, you have published lies and anti Government conspiracy theories in a Book coming from the CCP and they won’t let you.
China acts like it’s just one of the gang when it comes to trade, tourism and being a part of the world and people take that at face value.
So in short it’s not a surprise that a Country who murders you, covers it up then sells your organs if you practice the wrong religion would destroy a few books. Everyone in the Community should keep this in mind when ordering/backing from any company that does business in China because you might end up out of pocket and screwed over through no fault of the company itself.

March 27, 2019 at 10:40 pm #1367711I think you have explained why it’s such a surprise (although first time was always going to be a surprise). China acts like one of the gang when it comes to trade, tourism and being part of the world; this is trade (or not now they burned everything).
March 27, 2019 at 10:53 pm #1367714Modern China isn’t fully communistic anymore with them having what they call “capitalism with Chinese characteristics” and them having they share of rich and middle class that are both still outnumbered by poor. Only thing remaining from fully communistic China is that CCP and it’s leader pretty much rule over entire country and try to protect they position any means they can. So other than that they are all about trade and making money which is why most countries ignore more morally wrong things they do.
March 29, 2019 at 8:47 pm #1369202Morals of a country are always ignored when sufficiently large sums of money are involved …
Heck, if you were to use any kind of moral compass when trading world wide you’d have no one left to trade with.
Besides … no country ever was ‘fully communistic’ because the reality of live is incompatible with the ideals of communism.
People simply are too greedy and selfish for that kind of stuff to work.// —
I kind of keep hoping this is an April fools’ joke … but it would be so mean.
March 30, 2019 at 9:51 pm #1369734I also think it’s an overreaction, it’s a weird reaction.
