So here is the thing. In about 2 months I’m turning *coughcough* years old and my wife asked me “what do you wish for your brithday as a gift”.

And I’m terrible at thinking of stuff I want/need. Mostly because I don’t know they exist or because I forget about them to fast.

So here is were I call upon your help: suggest to me hobby tools, materials etc. that I really should have. I think up to 30 Euro should be ok but nothing much more expensive.

    Release your recommendations!

Stuff I found really made a difference in the last six months:

    • magnifiers – even if you don’t *need* them, they make painting faces and tiny details much more enjoyable
    • decent wet palette (Redgrass) – homebrew ones are fine but pro wet paper is just nice to use
    • pro arte renaissance sable brushes #2 – big belly, sharp point makes everything just nicer
    • daytime LEDs or arch light – I put LED strips under the shelf above my painting desk, what a difference!
    • decent flat sided side-snips
    • greenstuff world rollers

    A bit left of field:

    • magazine/website/patreon subscription (Duncan’s painting academy is £3.50 a month)
    • udemy/video tutorials on a hobby-related topic
    • some nice themed resin bases for your next squad/army

“pro arte renaissance sable brushes #2” Rigger, rounded or flat says the homepage… I’m guessing you mean rounded? https://proartebrushes.com/index.php?route=product/search&search=renaissance%20sable

Wet pallette (army painter), daytime LED, snips and rollers are already in the toolbox. Magnifiers… hmm… could be a thing.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, rounded. With green handles. Brilliant brushes. Keep their tip for a good long time, and carry a nice amount of paint. I am tempted to try a half-rigger one of these days (full rigger brushes look just a little *too* long to be useful).

Magnifiers are awesome. A tenner off fleabay. Even the stupid little lamp on your forehead turns out to be useful too.

If I tell her to get me one of those she’ll divorce me. Remember she’s an optician so anything but “the good stuff” would make her mad 😉 @blinky465

3D printer, laser cutter , air compressor and air brush?

that’s a bit over the suggested price range my dear Mr. @trewets but I might “stick” to the thing with the OTT coupon.

Oh yeah. I forgot about that bit. What about… an HD usb microscope? You can pick those up for about twenty quid. Or maybe a Raspberry Pi + camera? Stream the video output straight onto a telly for a super magnified view of whatever you’re p….. hang on, I might just try that myself…..

Thinking about tools that might be handy I’d recommend if you’re playing with anything METAL!!!!!! … *ahem* metal. I bought a gross of saw blades from Otto Frei over a decade ago and I’m still going through them. Overall here’s a list of single items that could be rummaged through and picked from. Good luck yo your wife and the options you now have to get as gifts.

    • a good jeweler’s saw and/or saw blades
    • hobby knife blades
    • fancy themed resin bases of your choice
    • plasticard sheets
    • lasercut MDF basing (the backbone for roller mold like Greenstuff World)
    • plastic terrarium/aquarium plants for basing/terrain

since you do have that fancy airbrush system I’d say some stuff to work with yours now

    • A large bottle of airbrush primer
    • airbrush paint thinner (Vallejo) for priming
    • airbrush flow improver (Vallejo) for helping the regular paint and to keep your system clean
    • airbrush cleaner solution
    • airbrush cleaning pot
    • airbrush spray filters (available here on the OTT store)
    • ultrasonic cleaner (nothing fancy and easy to find on Amazon)
    • dental paper points (they’re small enough to run through the nozzle of an airbrush to help cleaning)

Thinking about the suggestion @blinky465 made on magazine subscriptions it might not be bad (I think these also do digital)

    • Amazing Figure Modeler (probably will see more kits that are gods awfully beautiful but pricey and might be another hobby all to itself)
    • DAMAGED (great for seeing weathering done to models)
    • Figure Model Magazine
    • Figure Mentors

Needle files are a must if you don’t already have some! https://www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-82577-Needle-File-Piece/dp/B018IT3Y3Y/

Pin vice drill for drilling models (arms, legs, gun barrels etc) or archemedes drill – https://cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d02331/mini-archimedes-drill/dp/TL15768 – for flat sheet materials?
